Way too much hype...it doesn't prove anything. Not saying Newton isn't an intruguing prospect, but to suggest as Dilfer did he's a top 3 pick, I'm not so sure about that. Great success in college doesn't guarantee anything in the NFL. His size and speed allowed him to be as effective a runner as he was a passer...that's not likely to happen in the NFL. Guess the big question about him is can he be disciplined enough to be an effective NFL QB. All the workouts in the world won't prove any of that...I want to see him against real NFL players.
Pretty much. You look at his rushing totals against the 2 best defenses he faced and it's 22 carries for 67 yards and 22 carries for 39 yards. In the NFL Mike Vick is the only quarterback that can consisantly beat you with his legs. 4.5 speed is pretty much what everybody runs.
That's not saying his size and speed won't make a difference, but for the most part it's going to be his size and speed extended the play so he could make a play with his arm. Ala Freeman, ala Big Ben and if he can't make plays with his arm he's going to be Vince Young part 2.
Thats really is not 100% the case...... you have a point.....
Teams changed the way they defended Auburn to keep Cam in the pocket.
Unlike Vick and Matt Jones.... Cam could burn teams with his arm...and he did...
No NFL team is going to try and defended Cam the way they did in college. NFL WRs will score Touch Downs if you dedicate that much of the Defense to SPY the QB.
To beat Auburn you only need to stop 1 man.
If Tim Tebow and Steve Young can get free in the NFL , So can Cam newton.
I dont think Cam is going to be Mike vick or Randel Cunningham.
I think he is going to be a 400 yard Guy like Steve Young.
Steve Young was FASTER then the defensive ends and linebackers going after him....
Cam newton is as well...but he is ALSO quicker then steve young.
I am an Auburn Die hard..... I think newton is worth a 1st round pick , I also dont think he should be starting next year or maybe the year after.
If ever you wanted to see a "year 2" from a college QB is Cam.
He was becoming a better and better passer week after week. To the point were he was starting to not just Find the wide open guy...but was actually starting to challenge defenses by putting the ball in smaller openings.
I love the guy...I would love to get him on the 49ers....but i can understand why people are hesitant because of his 1 year or RAW performance, even epic as it was....there was alot of room for improvement.
But in the end....draft choice are MADE to gamble with. There is no such thing as a sure thing.
You see teams stacking the box to stop Cam's rushing ability as a positive I see it as a negative. In the NFL they don't need to stack the box against Cam. Meaning instead of throwing consisantly into single coverage he's going to have to work like every other quarterback to get his guys open. That's something he has very little expierence at.
Here's the biggest problem I have with Cam. He had 1 game with 20 completions and 1 game with 30 attempts and he wasn't that impressive in that game either. Most of the season he was going 15-20. I don't think he has the reps as a passing quarterback. I'm not against taking him because of guys like Big Ben and Freeman, but I see a bigger growing curve than most Newton guys are willing to admit.
