Niners eyeing Andy Dalton in free agency. I think that if they sign Dalton, Jimmy is gone. I think they are going QB round 1 and keeping Dalton as a backup.
Edit: Mods thanks for moving thread to Free Agency instead of NFL talk

I think it's the opposite. If they get him, Jimmy for sure stays and we don't go QB round one

That's how I would read it too. I really hope we don't allocate significant capital to a backup QB.

IMHO, Jimmy will only be gone if we get a considerable upgrade like Watson even if we get Andy Daulton. He will be a solid backup. The Niners have been wanting to upgrade the backup position, especially since Our Backup QB spots were not very good last year.

Would rather go for Alex Smith to mentor Rosen and the Rookie

even if they get dalton.. if you lose trent.. did you really change anything. i shake my head at the way this team has ignored pass protection for so long. no matter the qb

Why would they get rid of Jimmy only for Andy Dalton to start and mentor a rookie? Signing Dalton would mean he'd backup Jimmy. If they draft a rookie Kyle would sit him for at least a year since he isnt in favor of playing rookie QBs.

This is what I'm dreading. If Jimmy can't stay healthy, Dalton is mediocre, so he'll lead you to a mediocre record, but not bad enough to have a high draft pick in 2022 to grab a QB without giving up tons of assets to trade up.
We're in a great spot to select our future QB right now, but I doubt they go this route if they sign Dalton to backup Jimmy, with CJ and Rosen already in the mix.

Would not be upset about him as a backup at all. Underrated IMO

Yeah, I wouldn't mind at all either.

He is such an upgrade over last years replacements that took over when Jimmy G went down, He could step right in if there were an injury or be the #1 if we take a QB in the draft. He appears also to be a good mentor. A solid signing IMO.

Dalton played decently well the last 7 games of the season last year for Dallas. THAT Andy Dalton is not a considerable downgrade from Jimmy.

Enough with the backup Jimmy talk guys.
With Dalton making $7M last season, and Fitzpatrick signing for $10M this season, it makes absolutely no sense to try to bring in Dalton as a backup. We should not be allocating anything close $7-10M in a backup QB when we have much more important holes on the team to try to plug.
