According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Shawne Merriman is "not on solid footing with the Chargers" and remains on the trade block with the NFL's October 19 deadline approaching.
The Union-Trib also confirms that there's been "little to no activity," and why would there be? Beat writer Kevin Acee wouldn't even rule out Merriman being cut. Extremely injury prone and lacking burst off the edge at this point in his career, Merriman holds little to no value in San Diego or anywhere else.

Now if Merriman is cut, do we take a chance on him?? As of right now, I think a mixture of Lawson, Brooks and LaBoy is looking pretty effective.....oh yeah Haralson with his two sacks too....finally. Maybe we should look into seeing if San Diego would trade Merriman for Haralson straight up. It seems like a little risky trade, but maybe a change of scenery with his pal Vernon Davis just might spark his career back up.
If he's cut they would be crazy not to take a chance on him. Parys had one good game in the last 2 years. that isn't saying much. Manny still doesn't have a sack. Merriman and VD love to party though so that might not be the greatest mix. they must have like 3/4 parties a summer here in the DC area.

Nah, but him and VD I'm sure would be more focused on the field. I would love to see if Manusky could bring Merriman's old form back. I also think one of the reason hes playing so poorly right now is because he doesn't want to be there.

Have you been watching the games our pass "d" stinks and our run "d" has been just as bad. Not saying merriman will fix everything but I would like to see him in niner red.

Adam Schefter just reported on Sunday NFL Countdown that if Merriman is released after Tuesday he will have to clear waivers and the 49ers are expected to make a move for him. Schefter said Merriman's preference is to play for Baltimore or Miami.
Schefter also reported the team has internally debated making a trade for Merriman.
