He wouldn't be MUCH better than Smith IMO.
Kind of sounding like Rush Limbaugh - When he was on Sports center....
LOL No he isn't. So all of a sudden if you think McNabb is overrated you're a right wing nut with a drug addiction? This year I had the eagles as my favorite to make the superbowl from the NFC during the offseason after they went out and spent on Jason Peters, they got the Andrews brothers at OG, they got Maclin to give him another weapon, they extended Celek, they brought in Weaver and McCoy to help out the run game, and then McNabb absolutely blew it vs the Cowboys. Not just in the playoffs, but during the regular season as well. They underachieved this year and part of that was McNabb's fault. Look at all the weapons he has a round him, DeSean Jackson, Maclin, McCoy, Westbrook, Weaver, Celek, Reggie Brown/Jason Avant/Kevin Curtis, solid OLine, very good D, great coaching staff, and they still failed to get it done.
The Eagles were just as good with Kolb at QB, and they were just as good when they had Garcia at QB, and Feeley didn't do too bad either. McNabb's had multiple weapons for the last 5-6 years and he never gets it done.
I am right there with you. I have defended McNabb for too long, almost every year including last season I predict the Eagles to go to the Super Bowl. Many an off season I wished for McNabb, but this year, I would rather stick with Alex over him.....and if you know me, you know that is saying a lot
But why stay with Smith - if you have the potential to win it all? I know that sounds crazy and very optimistic - But McNabb has proven over the last 7 out of 10 years that he's a special QB.
He's proven that he can get to the Super Bowl - and I believe if the Niners just had that one last missing component - they would be a Super Bowl Contending team.
But our roster isn't even as good as the Eagles and our coaching isn't as good as the Eagles so if McNabb can't win a superbowl with them why could he win one here?
Very good point. I agree that Reid is probably better at x's and o's then Sing - but I believe Coach Sing is better at motivating and getting the most out of his players.
I believe that Phili's D's the last 3 years have not been as good as the Niners D last year and as good they will be this year.
Also, They never had a TE like Davis and a running back like Gore. Westbrook’s was probably better all around but Gore is a better pure runner and is a special player.
Now that the Niners have Crabtree - I do believe our roster is at least as good if not better than the Eagles.

What if they trade for McNabb and he retires? Can there be or is there any protection against this?

This isn't the no-brainer some would believe. McNab is gettiing older and has had injury problems. That, coupled with fact he'd be learning a new system, and us giving up a first rounder makes the trade a bit of a gamble. I say give Alex this one last, complete season to show us he's for real and continue to groom Davis or draft another prospect. If Alex shows up, that shuts up the naysayers. If he's still the inconsistent Alex we've seen thus far, that shuts up the homers, and let's use those 2 first round picks for other more pressing, and obvious, areas of need.

You know, depending on how you look at Steve Young's career, you could say the same thing about him.

pwnge.
When we finally put a team that was better around Steve, he won the whole thing. He played behind worse OLines than McNabb and Reid was a better coach than Marriucci. McNabb can't hold Steve's jock.
No offense, but that doesn't explain some of the throws Steve made against the Cowboys in the playoffs prior to the 94 season. Look, I love Steve Young. And, even though I believe Joe is the greatest ever, I think that Steve Young is a better steward of the game. I'm just saying don't paint McNabb as a choker and absolve Steve in the same paragraph, when their careers are similar. And when Steve was playing bad, Seifert was the coach, not Mooch.

Since Steve Young is retired and is not an option for us, the real question becomes: Do you think Smith is a better QB for this team than McNabb would be?

Now this makes more sense to me. McNabb, is older, and would have to learn a new system. To me this is better argument than, "McNabb is a choker."
If we don't get McNabb, we must get some Oline help and a pass rush.

McNabb has injury problems? Have you forgotten Smith's injury issues? You do realize that Smith hasn't played a full season since 2006, don't you?

One of the only reasons I also don't want, this is Smith's final year, we have to see once and for all if he's the man or not. And if McNabb is picked up, than we have to re-sign Smith, because he didn't get his chance to prove himself. That's the way I see it at least. Trust me, if this was before he restructured his contract or before last year, than I'd be 100% for picking up McNabb.

I've been reading on other mb's that the picks would be a third this year and a second next year. The second would be conditional, possibly becoming a first depending on McNabbs performance.

I don't think so. Where are all the Smith supporters now? They have to stop this.

I'd do that.
Donovan and Nate are working out in the off-season already and they aren't even team-mates. Imagine how much Nate could benefit from him if they were actually team-mates.
I'm only saying that because I think it'd eliminate the need for Alex. You can let him leave, trade him, or let him stay as the back-up and compete with Davis in 2-3 years. What's the rush to throw Alex on the field? Aaron Rodgers sat for a long time and it seemed to help him.
