Do we fix the oline in the draft or free agency

Bingo that's why it will be the draft b/c smart teams don't let there lineman get away and when they do they suffer for it. Draft them young and great and pay them for years is the way to go.

I think history has shown you can acquire good guards through FA, but I can't recall a stud OT changing teams through FA in recent memory.

I would go with the draft, I believe lineman drafted in the first 2 rounds have over a 50% success rate and we have 3 picks there. Growing your own lineman from the late first round on, is a lot cheaper than buying a couple Hutchinsons. I think it is better in the age of the salary cap to spend your free agent money on skill players.
Oddly enough our old model of developing low draft pick waiver wire lineman would be great these days, to save cap money for other positions.

Honestly, its gonna take both.

We potentially need 3 new starters. Finding 3 good FA's in a single year or hitting on 3 good OL draft picks in a single year would be tough.

If Rachal pulls his head out, than that leaves 2 spots. Even that could be tough, depending on who actually makes it to FA and what happens with the cap, etc.
Left Tackle in draft
Left Guard in FA
Mid round G to push Rachal

I definitely think we need to get someone to push Rachal. Singletary seems to think he's playing bad because he's uptight, but it wouldn't surprise me if it started out as an issue of complacency.

I think it's really damning on Wragge that they refuse to give him a shot even with as bad as Rachal as played. I know Wragge has looked solid in the past, but so have guys like Jason Hill, so there's obviously something there that the coaches just don't like.

Agreed
Bottom line, if Michael Crabtree didnt drop to niners at number 10, then we would have drafted Michael Oher.

but in no way should Chilo be feeling complacent. His play has been sub standard and he has to be hearing from the staff and seeing it on tape when they watch it. Maybe they need to get some plays where he is pulling and getting some legs under him to get him started in a game. Pass protection isn't his strong point at all. but he appears to have the tools just gotta get him some better seasoning. But he does need a push.

The thing is Scott isn't gonna pay top dollar to a guard so getting one in free agency might be tricky, but I do agree with your thinking.

Sounds very good. Throw in Chris Scott as a mid-round option as well.

But i do prefer the FA for either a guard or RT.

heck to the yes
If we could get a young tackle in free agency would be great. If we do go after guys in free agency we can't get these older injury prone lineman. We need to spend the dough if they are out there. I think we are going to approach it.

I'd prefer a Ryan Clady esque pick and move Staley back to the right side. Unfortunately this tackle class looks kinda mediocre and we're going to have to settle at picking a RT.
How about the next time we draft a good player pay them so they stick around IE Smiley..............
