49ers' Kyle Shanahan looking to ramp up practice workload for healthier Elijah Mitchell

By David Bonilla

Elijah Mitchell's 963 rushing yards last season set a San Francisco 49ers franchise record for the most by a rookie. But, how he accomplished the feat is even more impressive. Mitchell was never completely healthy for most of the season, dealing with shoulder, rib, finger, and knee injuries. In April, Mitchell underwent a clean-up procedure on his knee. Head coach Kyle Shanahan isn't about to throw a full workload on the second-year running back. He knows how important Mitchell is to the success of the upcoming season. "Elijah's just getting back healthy," Shanahan told reporters before Monday's practice. "We didn't get him in OTAs. He did a lot of good things last year, but he was also banged up throughout the year. So Elijah is just trying to get back to [100

The San Francisco 49ers bolstered their defensive line last season with the midseason acquisition of defensive end Charles Omenihu from the Houston Texans, setting themselves up for a late-season push, which ultimately placed them in the playoffs, where they reached the NFC Championship Game before losing to the Los Angeles Rams. Reminiscing on the trade last season with Brad Graham of TheSFNiners, Omenihu said the trade was shocking, but that everything happens for a reason and that he's excited about where he currently is. "[The trade] was shocking a little bit, but everything happens for a reason…I'm happy that I'm a 49er and we're rolling now. Ain't no hiccups now." Interestingly enough, Omenihu faced his former team last season

Jimmy Garoppolo reported to San Francisco 49ers training camp on Tuesday and will continue to be seen at team facilities in the near future, but his days in the Bay Area almost certainly remain numbered. 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan provided the latest on Garoppolo's situation on Tuesday when they spoke to reporters for several minutes as players arrived for the start of camp at team facilities in Santa Clara. Lynch and Shanahan spoke in person with Garoppolo on Tuesday for the first time in months and came away with a positive outlook on Garoppolo's future as well as his health following offseason shoulder surgery. "We had a good meeting with Jimmy this morning -- Kyle and myself -- and had a really good discussion," Lynch said.

Deebo Samuel's 49ers trade request wasn't a negotiation tactic, says Michael Irvin

By David Bonilla

After Deebo Samuel signed a three-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers, making the talented wide receiver a very wealthy man, some assumed that his April trade request was a negotiating tactic. According to Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver and NFL Network analyst Michael Irvin, it wasn't. Samuel legitimately wanted out of Santa Clara. In April, Irvin admitted that he spoke with Samuel after the Super Bowl, advising the young wideout to stay with Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers because that would be best for his career. "Like, it kind of felt, OK, he didn't receive that well," Irvin said in April. In an interview with 95.7 The Game on
