Jeremy Fowler isn’t confident 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo will land with Browns or Texans

Jul 13, 2022 at 7:08 AM--

This week, Jeremy Fowler suggested that everyone might want to keep their eyes on the Seattle Seahawks regarding potential suitors for Jimmy Garoppolo. It would be unexpected if the San Francisco 49ers traded the quarterback to a division rival, creating a situation where they would have to face him twice a year. However, if there are no other suitors, the Niners might have to consider it at least.

The Cleveland Browns have been touted as a potential destination. They wait to hear the fate of quarterback Deshaun Watson, who has faced 24 civil lawsuits from women accusing him of sexual misconduct and sexual assault. The league could suspend him for much or all of the 2022 season.

Then you hear the Houston Texans' name every now and then in Garoppolo chatter. That's primarily because of general manager Nick Caserio, who was the director of player personnel in New England when the Patriots drafted Garoppolo.

Fowler doesn't necessarily see the Browns or the Texans getting involved in a strong pursuit of Garoppolo.

"I don't know that I would say Cleveland is a big suitor," Fowler said Tuesday on KNBR's Tolbert & Copes show. "I think they're pretty comfortable with Jacoby Brissett. They got him as a bridge quarterback. They know they might need that sort of depth to make it work. They have Josh Dobbs too. ... I don't think they feel they have enough draft capital to really do anything like that. So we'll see what kind of moves they might make.

"But Houston maybe because of the Nick Caserio connection there with the GM. But even that, they really like Davis Mills, so it would be sort of a surprise to see that kind of move as well."

Garoppolo has been the 49ers' starter for the past four-and-a-half seasons. He is entering the final year of his contract, but none of the remaining money is guaranteed. San Francisco can release the quarterback at any point before the start of the season without much of a penalty. Ideally, the team would like to trade Garoppolo instead of cutting him and receiving nothing in return.

49ers players report to training camp on July 26. Last month, head coach Kyle Shanahan shared that he expects Garoppolo to practice if he remains on the roster at the start of training camp.

"I'll think about that when that day comes," Shanahan said. "But [if] Jimmy's under contract with us, and he's healthy, right now, I would see him coming to practice unless we traded him."

49ers' Kyle Shanahan still not optimistic about Jimmy Garoppolo's return this week

It seems it's time for your weekly Jimmy Garoppolo update. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has been sidelined since suffering a broken foot on December 4. However, there is a slight chance Garoppolo could return and suit up for the playoffs, likely serving as rookie Brock Purdy's backup. That probably won't be this week, though. Last week, head coach Kyle Shanahan stated that the quarterback probably wouldn't be ready for an NFC Championship Game appearance. However, Garoppolo suiting up for the Super Bowl, should the 49ers make it that far, might be more likely. On Monday, Shanahan was once again asked about Garoppolo's recovery and

49ers' Kyle Shanahan provides timeline on potential Jimmy Garoppolo return

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is making progress in his return from a broken foot. However, whether or not he returns at any point during the playoffs remains up in the air. "It was the first week he was able to come out on the field, walk around a little bit, do some work out there," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Friday. Garoppolo was just working through his rehab, the coach said. Of course, reporters seeing the injured quarterback prompted questions about his timeline for a return. Could Garoppolo potentially be ready to suit up—likely as Brock Purdy's backup—for the NFC Championship, assuming the 49ers make it past the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday? "I'd be surprised, but I think it depends on how this whole

49ers don't expect Jimmy Garoppolo to be active vs. Eagles; Deebo Samuel added to injury list

It was unlikely that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suited up on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, serving as rookie Brock Purdy's backup in the NFC Championship Game. Still, there was a slight chance the injured veteran could be healthy enough to be active. The team awaited the results of an X-ray on Tuesday to see how much Garoppolo's broken foot has recovered. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Wednesday and shared that the 49ers got the X-ray results. "I don't expect to have him this week," Shanahan revealed. Garoppolo sustained his injury on December 4. A return for the Super Bowl remains a possibility. A new name was added to the 49ers' injury report. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel will not practice
