The San Francisco 49ers will make every effort to trade Jimmy Garoppolo once the quarterback fully recovers from his offseason shoulder surgery and starts throwing again. Garoppolo was excused from this week's mandatory minicamp as he continues his rehab away from the team.
What if the 49ers can't trade Garoppolo by training camp? Does head coach Kyle Shanahan expect the quarterback to join his teammates and practice?
"Yes, I do," Shanahan answered on Tuesday.
The coach was asked if he would consider excusing the quarterback, as he did this week. After all, should Garoppolo be injured, his salary for 2022 becomes guaranteed, and the 49ers' options dwindle.
"I'll think about that when that day comes," Shanahan said. "But [if] Jimmy's under contract with us, and he's healthy, right now, I would see him coming to practice unless we traded him."
As for excusing Garoppolo from this week's activities, the 49ers didn't see the point in taking the quarterback away from his rehab schedule.
"All his rehab is down in L.A., so for him to stop and come up here for a three-day minicamp doesn't make much sense for him or for us," Shanahan said. "So we want him to stay with his rehab."
"It wasn't a real risky surgery or anything. I think it just takes time. So I think the plan still has always been July [to throw]. But I know there's no concerns with it, and he'll be throwing sooner than later."
