Next Gen Stats show George Kittle’s impact in the 49ers run game

Earlier this month, Doug Gottlieb of FS1 stated that San Francisco 49ers tight end
George Kittle is
"not really a blocker."
Shock, and then laughter ensued among fans and even some of the media across the country.
That's because Kittle is viewed as one the best — if not
the best — blockers in the NFL. Even respected analyst
Brian Baldinger came to the 49ers tight end's defense, armed with film breakdowns proving Gottlieb's statement to be false.
"You don't get on the field at Iowa for Kirk Ferentz unless you can block, and [Kittle has] taken those skills to San Francisco. The best blocking tight end in the NFL," Baldinger concluded.
Pro Football Focus' advanced analytics show that Kittle is indeed an excellent blocker. His run-blocking grade of 76.8 ranks in the top 6 among tight ends, and his run-blocking grade of 82.8 on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints was his best of the season, surpassing his previous best (78.1) set a week earlier, against the Baltimore Ravens.
Now, we have another statistic showing just how much Kittle's run-blocking contributes to the 49ers rushing attack, and how significant of an impact he makes in its success.
When Kittle is on the field, the 49ers offense averages 4.9 yards per carry and a 43 percent success rate on outside runs. Without the tight end, that average drops to 3.0 yards per carry and a 29 percent success rate.
San Francisco's offense explodes for 10-or-more-yard runs on 18 percent of its rushing attempts on the outside with Kittle in the lineup. That number drops to seven percent without him.
So there you go. More proof that Kittle is, indeed, a fantastic blocker.

Graziano: Don't rule out the 49ers drafting Trey Lance at No. 3

It's a foregone conclusion that Zach Wilson is going No. 2 overall to the New York Jets. With Trevor Lawrence a lock to head to the Jacksonville Jaguars at No. 1, that leaves the San Francisco 49ers with their choice of Justin Fields, Mac Jones, and Trey Lance.
Many are predicting that the trade up to No. 3 was made for Jones. Others feel that is a massive reach that didn't necessarily require a move into the top 3. ESPN's Dan Graziano warns fans not to overlook Lance as the quarterback of the future in San Francisco.

Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young brought up an interesting point during his Wednesday interview on KNBR. The San Francisco 49ers don't expect—or hope not—to be drafting as high as No. 12 in upcoming years. So, if they wanted one of the top quarterbacks, and with next year's crop of prospects not looking as attractive as this year's, moving up in this draft was probably a smart move.
The 49ers would probably never find a way to get into the top three if they sit in the low 20s—or even better, at No. 32. At No. 12, however, they had a shot and pulled it off. They still had to give up a lot, though, to make a move.

Mike Sando of The Athletic has been doing his rounds around the league, asking about the San Francisco 49ers trading up to the No. 3 overall pick to select a quarterback. Even with the top two picks considered a lock—Trevor Lawrence to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Zach Wilson to the New York Jets—no one is really certain about the 49ers' plan.
There is speculation—a lot of it.
Because of his history with quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins and Matt Ryan, many feel San Francisco traded up for Mac Jones of Alabama. Two NFL executives who spoke to Sando can see that happening. Whether or not they agree with the potential selection is another story.

D.J. Jones joined KNBR on Friday morning and discussed the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback situation, a topic that will be discussed ad nauseam until the draft later this month—and probably well beyond. That's because the 49ers now own the No. 3 overall pick, thanks to last week's trade. They also still have Jimmy Garoppolo on the roster and have stated that this latest development doesn't mean a divorce with the veteran quarterback is imminent.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch expect Garoppolo to be San Francisco's Week 1 starter. He will likely serve as a bridge quarterback until the younger player is ready to take over the reins—assuming Shanahan and Lynch hit on the pick.
