49ers waive NT Ian Williams off reserve/NFI list

The San Francisco 49ers have waived NT Ian Williams off of the reserve/non-football injury list, per multiple sources. Williams was placed on the injury list on July 30.

Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports that the move does not prevent the 49ers from re-signing Williams down the road. The absense of Williams certainly contributed to the team's poor run defense this season.

In March, Williams, who was about to become a free agent, agreed to a new five-year contract with the 49ers. That contract was believed to pay Williams between $5 and $6 million per year. However, when his availability for the 49ers' season opener in September came into question, that contract was replaced by a one-year deal.

Following a physical, it was determined that Williams' rehab from surgery on his left leg would require more time than originally believed. Prior to the extent of the injury becoming better known, Williams was considered one of the top interior defender free agents.

Williams missed 21 of 32 games from in 2013 and 2014 because of a leg fracture in each of the two seasons. He became a starter in 2014, but the fractured leg ended his season after nine games. He started all 16 games for the 49ers in 2015 and underwent a follow-up procedure upon completion of the season.

Williams joined the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2011.

Updated list of 49ers draft picks in 2024 after NFL penalty

By David Bonilla

The NFL has penalized the San Francisco 49ers for payroll accounting errors that occurred at the end of the 2022 league year. This has led to the team forfeiting their fifth-round draft pick in 2025 and a reduction in their fourth-round pick in the upcoming draft. San Francisco's fourth-round selection, initially No. 131 overall, now shifts down four spots to the end of the round at No. 135, following the compensatory picks from that round. Despite this setback, the 49ers still possess 10 selections in the 2024 NFL Draft but will be short a pick next year. The team's selections in the upcoming draft are as follows: Round 1, Pick 31 Overall Round

He noted that, for now, the 49ers are not interested in such a deal. With @Ravens creating cap room, some of it could be earmarked for a WR. We heard they reached out to SF about Deebo availability (that's a no, at least for now) and are watching Chargers WR situation closely (1 getting cut or

The San Francisco 49ers likely aren't finished fortifying their defense and have reportedly expressed interest in bolstering their defensive backfield. If they require assistance making a significant move, one 49ers player is prepared to lend a helping hand. Last week, the Buffalo Bills released All-Pro cornerback Tre'Davious White, who appears to be an ideal fit for San Francisco's needs opposite Charvarius Ward. Over the weekend, Ward took to social media to reveal that he and White share the same agent and that he is willing to nudge the free-agent defensive back in the right direction.
