Keeping up with
Colin Jones
After watching safety Colin Jones at TCU's Pro Day, former Cowboys player personnel director Gil Brandt was reminded of a young Cliff Harris. It likely was the biggest compliment Jones ever has received.
Harris went undrafted in 1970, passed over by 26 teams in 17 rounds. The Cowboys signed him as a free agent, and Harris made six Pro Bowls.
Jones has a chance to be drafted in the late rounds after his "out of the blue" performance last month at TCU. He since has worked out for the 49ers and the Bears.
"I feel that I can play [in the NFL]," Jones said. "Special teams are going to be a strong point for me, especially starting out. I had a lot of opportunity to play special teams in my four years at TCU."
Jones nearly stole the spotlight from Andy Dalton at the Horned Frogs' Pro Day. He ran times of 4.34 and 4.38 in the 40-yard dash, had a 37-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot, 4-inch broad jump.
The only question is his position. He is too small, at 5-foot-111/2, 201 pounds, to make the transition to linebacker. Thus, teams are looking at him as a free safety.
"In the NFL, they don't have the position I played at TCU," Jones said. "With our 4-2-5 defense, it's just a little different. I think I'm probably a deep safety, but I don't have a lot of reps on film playing that role, and that's what I'm going to have to play given my size."
This season for TCU he had 80 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 INT that was returned for a TD.
He seems a bit on the small side, but is fast (4.34, 4.38!). Being compared to Cliff Harris is heck of a compliment towards the kid. He was a starter for one of the top defenses in college football. He's projected to go Late 6th Rd. at the highest. Just thought I'd give everyone a little info. on someone we're supposedly keeping an eye on.
MadDog has him at #224 on his Big Board.
OTC has him at #214 on his Big Board.
AB didn't have him on his Big Board. (Sorry in advanced if I missed him on there).
