When one looks at the WR on paper, and focuses on the "pros" and not the "cons," it is easy to get excited. Unfortunately, that approach leads to disappointed, disillusioned fans.

I would like to think I am in the middle. Crabtree put up some nice numbers in college and did OK for a portion of last season. However, it is one thing to have a couple of decent, not great games, and an entirely different thing to learn to be a professional football player. This latest dust-up in practice strongly suggest he is NOT a professional football player...yet. To put that type of guy in the #1 role only speaks to the weakness of the group, not the strength.

Morgan is another guy that is intriguing but he was a low round draft choice. That doesn't mean he CAN'T be a solid player but he hasn't reached any level of consistency yet either.

Ginn has had enough said about him. The best line is that the 49ers #3 guy is a guy that was cut by a team that was arguably no better than the 49ers last year.

Davis is excellent but if the other guys don't take the pressure off him, he will not have things so easy. We must also remember, he has not yet shown the ability to make "hot reads" to help his QB.

That leaves the rest of the corps as a collection of guys that would not make the roster in Indy or NE or SD or any other good offensive team in the league.

Let's hope the "pros" truly outweigh the "cons" but don't bet the mortgage on it.

I'm sorry leading all rookies in yards per game isn't professional enough for you

I kind of agree about the strength of this group. Crabtree will put up his numbers but after that ALL of the WR are inconsistent at best. I kind of wish we would have been able to sign or trade someone this past offseason that would be able to unseat Morgan as the #2. I have a feeling Crabtree is going to see some double teams this year and that means Morgan and Ginn are gonna have to make plays. Im kinda of skeptical about them being able to do that on a regular basis. I guess we shall see on Sunday.
Honestly, I dont know what you guys are talking about. If you exclude Davis, I think our WR corp is pretty weak. Crabtree is the only legit/threat in my opinion. Morgan is slow, Zig might be good, but it's hard to get excited about a guy that has spent the last 3 seasons on the practice squad of a team desperate for WR. Ginn has no heart and Williams is a rookie.

I would much rather see, a two TE set (Davis,Walker), 2 back (Gore, Westbrook) and Crabtree.

No, he clearly has talent to be a quality pro pass catcher but he has not learned how to BE a pro at this point. We now know that his work ethic was judged to be sub-par by his teammates which led to the altercation. He also has confirmed something of a diva attitude by his refusal to speak to the press - never a good thing if you want recognition.

Also, a rookie has a certain advantage the first time he faces a DB. However, the second time, after the DB has studies his moves, that initial advantage is diminished and it comes down to execution of details. For a guy who does not have a very high work ethic, that could be problematic.

that would be fun to watch if good ol' Jimmy Raye would come out of the stone age and be just a little more creative

You'd rather see the 2 TE set huh? Well my friend, you're in luck. That seems to be Raye's bread and butter when it comes to passing plays. I'd rather see more 3 WR sets with either Ginn or Z in the slot. I know Walker and VD are fast for TEs, but it's still a little hard to stretch the field with TEs. Also, I'm pretty sure the league is on to VD running that seam route now. Raye ran that pattern to death last season, and teams will be ready for it this season. The Hawks drafted a pretty good safety this year, wonder if those seam routes by VD had anything to do with it.
The bottom line is this offense has some weapons. My only question is will Raye willing to use these weapons? Will we see another year of sending Morgan in motion to outside of the TE, only to block for an obvious running play? Of how about Raye's always dangerous draw play on 3rd and long! Lets not forget the awesome 2nd down and long screen pass!

I have zero confidence in Jimmy Raye. The WRs on this team will be an after thought again this year.

I have a feeling Ziggy will surpass Ginn for the #3 spot.. I hope im wrong and Ginn becomes the deep threat we need to stretch the field.

There is a good chance of that. Smith doesn't always throw the most accurate passes, and Z has the best hands on the team. Ginn has been known to drop alot of passes..........
