I love this post.

No further explanation needed.

That's why they keep getting beat by top level teams when it comes to the playoffs. They are one-dimensional and dominating in one dimension gets you to the big games, but it doesn't help you win the big games.

The Colts began running the ball easily getting 5 yard chunks. Did this help them open up their offense? Absolutely not. When they went back to the pass, they were right back where they started: dump-offs here and there with no ability to get anything open deep or yards after the catch.

Why did this happen? I mean, they were able to run the ball well. It happened because when they ran the ball, it was in Shotgun against nickel or dime. When they passed the ball, it was still against nickel or dime. Running the ball out of Shotgun had no affect on the defensive strategy. The Playaction played no part in these runs.

If they began to snap from under Center and ran the ball, it would have opened up the affect of what the importance of running the ball actually is used for, which is PLAYACTION. None of those runs set up any type of playaction to help the Colts free up something deep or a breakdown in coverage for open holes after the catch.

So please, let's not resort to being a Shotgun team.

So Joe, how does shotgun cause Manning to throw a pick on a play they love to run that was obviously studied and countered by the opposing D?

Every QB can eff up any play and even more when he's throwing 40+ times against a defense refusing to give up the long pass.

What I am talking about is the general concept the defense decided to use. They went with keep everything in front and no big plays. Play into that often enough and something will happen for the defense. The Colts didn't counter it and still tried to force a Spread/Shotgun. When you have a QB like Marino or Manning, offenses tend to get into tunnel vision thinking they need to cater 100% to the pass which is the Colts primarily using shotgun no matter what and Marino offenses always quickly to get away from the run or under Center.

The fundamentals to breakdown a defense refusing to break their umberlla coverage is play action and running strong from under Center. Colts should have used some big packages but they couldn't because it's not what they do. It's the fatal flaw of having THAT type of QB (Manning/Marino).

Yes, it gets you almost to where you want to be but when you get there, smarter coaches and better teams are waiting. These guys figure the Colts offense out and it's been happening almost every year for Manning.

Don't the Saints run a good amount of shotgun? And, they have a much better running game than the Colts despite not having a star RB.

Not as much as you'd think. They just have about 43 billion different types of formations

By my count, going through the NFL.com play by play sheet, the Saints ran a play from the shotgun 21 times of 57 plays, or about 37% of the time.
My main point is that we need to use Shotgun when necessary and be able to run a standard base 21 offense when needed. Colts are not set up to run a 21 offense which is why they get figured out in the playoffs and which is why they cannot commit to running the ball.

Come on, man. As if Brees was under center the entire game... He was in shotgun very often.

I can't believe the implications you're making here. You're telling me that the Colts' offense which operates quite a lot of the shotgun, marginally more than the Saints do, is what contributed to their downfall? I absolutely do not buy it for a second.

To further add: Do you believe we run as much Shotgun as they (the Colts) do, have the same kind of personnel, and will be running the same exact system? We're two different teams and I imagine we'd strive to use an attack that works best.

The Colts offensive system is not why they lost the Super Bowl and that's one of the wildest stretches I've seen in a long time. What if Manning had checked into a run on the play he through the Pick-Six? Perhaps no turnover occurs and a minute later the game is 24-24. The Colts system didn't throw an interception, Peyton did. The same exact thing could have and likely would have happened if he had been under center on that play. And give Porter credit, he knew his team was blitzing and the ball had to come out fast. Smart defensive play and a game-changing moment for his team.

Common Brees had 32 completions last night. Manning had 31. They set a super bowl record of completions. If thats not proof enough that this is now a passing league, I think you need to check yourself.

Shotgun is successful, but we would always be more balanced like the Saints (with some kind of running game, screens to our RBs, and times of shotgun) than the colts. Just chill dude.

Unless you're perfectly happy LOSING the Super Bowl! Last time I looked, the idea was to out smart and out perform the other team. Which the winning team did yesterday.

2 Super Bowls with 1 win the last couple years, along with consistently being a Super Bowl contender every year, is more than this team has done in over 15 years.

Besides, the Colts didn't lose last night because of their offense.

The shotgun also gives the quarterback an extra few tenths of a second to make a decision, since Alex is not the quickest at making reads that extra time is important.

It is a passing league but if you are going to sit there in shotgun with 3 wides every single play, then you won't be winning many Suprebowls. No matter how smart Manning is, one guy can't outplay 11 which is what the Colts are set up to do.

and who in the 49ers organization said we are going to a pure shot gun offense?

They are playing against a very high powered offense so 20-30 points was expected to be given up. Even then, 7 of those points were handed to the Saints.

The Colts lost because of their offense. They only scored 17 points against a team that didn't have a great defense. The Colts defense played as expected and actually played better than expected by giving up less than 30.

They didn't lose because of their defense. They lost because their offense couldn't provide a big play here and there because it was too damn predictable.

It just seems as though fans want the "Raye-Gun" 100% of the time because that's the only time Alex puts up decent numbers.

I hope Alex learns to play under Center this offseason so that we can be an offense that the defense has no clue on how to stop.
