I heard that he wants to retire in a few years but haven't heard that he's retiring this early. Thought he would hang around to wait for Austin too. That match seems to be inevitable at this point.
Probally won't happen this year though due to all of the star power they already have.

I keep coming back to that conclusion as well. The WWE is way too thin for Punk to call it in just a few months. He's definitely made no secret that he wants to go out in his prime, Barry Sanders style.

Austin will never wrestle again.

WWE has "messed" with the "X" in matches before for example I remember them using it a few years ago when Mysterio was slammed into the ring post when he was strapped to a back board, all the refs came out to help and a few threw up the X. He wasn't really injured from the spot but they were using it to write him off the show for a while anyway. More recently, it was used on Jericho at the elimination chamber, and Cena used it when Zach Ryder was wheeled off the stage by Kane. All parts of story lines without a legit injury.
It is a nod to the smarks as they try and keep everyone guessing a little bit. It isn't as if the people in the back aren't aware of these things and will get confused when the gesture is used as part of a story line, nor has it ever been off limits, I guess most people just haven't noticed it before.

Austin was quoted the other day as being "100% cleared to wrestle" and facing Punk was at the top of his list. I think the match should be saved fror WM 30.

Really? I thought he was still on a bum knee from surgery

I always thought it was the neck injury that forced him into retirement.

he's going to always be banged up due to wear and tear on his body, but he's prob healed up enough to wrestle a match or two

It was, but it's healed enough for him to be okay with one more match. His knee is heeled now too. He says he's 100% cleared to wrestle now. All signs are pointing to him waiting to WM 30 though.
Cena v Taker and Punk v Austin at WM 30. I think the biggest issue that could derail that would be Lesnar and Rock sticking around. At some point this becomes a numbers game.

With the recentreturnof alumni Brock Lesnar and The Rock to WWE, how likely are we to see you compete in a WWE ring again?
Austin: Ah, that's a good question. Who knows? I'm really happy doing the acting things that I do. I'm really happy doing 'Redneck Island.' I love this show. I love the element of reality television. I'm having a good time. No one'schasingme around with a steelchair. I'm not traveling all over the world. I've been there, and I did it at a high level. I'm not going to rule out areturn, but I'm not saying a return is in the near future.
Consider that he hasn't wrestler an actual match since WM19 vs the Rock, I'd say he has had tons of time to heal.. look what all of that time off did for HBK (4 years out due to his back) & then how much longer he stayed. Austin returning to the ring would be bigger than the Rock IMO, and to start it off (or just a 1 time deal) it needs to be someone who can make even Khali look great... and that all points to Punk

His return is not bigger than the Rock's. He's a 50 year old reality tv star nowadays. He'll probally get better tv ratings than what WM 28 got but that's after a year's worth of build.
If Austin came back he's not returning full time. Match with Punk, and a match with Cena and that's about it. There really isn't much interest in Austin v Cena either.

Austin can barely wrestle anymore (if any), as his knees are all but destroyed not to mention that he still has those spinal issues that go back to when the late Owen Hart piledrived him into the ring. If he would compete, Punk or Cena would have to sell it pretty well.
