Whenever the conversation turns to who will replace Charlie Weis at Notre Dame, one of the first names to pop up in the conversation -- after Bob Stoops, Brian Kelly, Bob Stoops and Brian Kelly -- is TCU head coach Gary Patterson.
Based on the news coming out of the area this afternoon, however, Patterson's name can likely be stricken from any kind of Irish conversation.
Citing two sources close to the situation, ESPNDallas.com is reporting that TCU and Patterson have reached an agreement on a long-term contract extension. The number of years added to his current deal has not been reported.
An official announcement is expected to come Wednesday morning, the website reported.
This is the second extension Patterson has received in less than a year; back in early January, the nine-year TCU coach received an extension on his deal that would've kept him at the school through the 2014 season.
In addition to years added to his current contract and -- presumably -- a sizable bump in pay, Patterson's new deal will include pay raises for his coaching staff.
Counting this season's unbeaten squad, Patterson's Horned Frogs teams have posted 10-plus wins in six of his nine seasons.

No. What does it do for ND ? Chances are they make little to no money from this bowl game and what does beating a MAC team do for our season ? We also have no HC, and a new HC would have little time to install his system or get a staff together (especially seeing as he'd likely want to take some staff members from his current staff if he is currently coaching).
What about Clausen and Tate ? Do they want to risk injury if they do declare in a meaningless game ?
Our best interest is finding our new coach letting him get his staff together and keep himself on top of recruiting.....trying to keep guys who have verbals already and finding guys that fit his system.

Of course if ND was offered a BCS game with this record, they would have no problem accepting it. Its pretty obvious they will only play if it makes them look good on national tv. God forbid they are humiliated by playing in a lesser-tier bowl they deserve at this point.

I think it's kind of f**ked up to take a new job while you still have a game to coach. It's distracting.

Also why is there a rush to announce a coach right away? Why can't it wait until after the bowl games?

Recruiting, this gap between the end of the season and the bowl games is a big time for coaches to get a lot of their recruiting trips out of the way. They don't have much time to get it done after the bowl games.
