Jim Bob took us to the lowest point in our defensive history with 30 passing TDs against and a team that was run on at will.
He was also too stubborn to change style with his lack of personnel...got us always playing from behind with the exception of the Rams games.

I like the rumblings of the D looking good. AA, Uncle Buck, Tank, even Gilbert been taking advtnage of their opportunities.
Jim Bob is giving the 9ers intellectual property on what not to do now.

Once Fangio left, that defense because a train wreck. Ugly.
I have to say, there was a time where our defense was in the backfield, virtually, every single play. I'm excited to get back to that attack-the-backfield mentality vs. the control-the-LOS mentality. It would be nice to see other teams RB's (ala Gore/Hyde) constantly ducking/dodging players just to get back to the original LOS...facing an upstream wave of defensive players.

Once all our all pro players left it became a train wreck.

Yup that off-season was so brutal and Baalke thought his draft picks were gonna replace them just like that.

You could be the greatest defensive coach of all time, and still would have a bad defense with last years roster/injuries.

No question. I'm still laughing at Baalke saying something like, "As a GM you never want to say 'rebuild' but..."

Just say it dude...we all knew it.

It makes you appreciate Lynch's open and honest and transparent stance that much more.

Yeah, I missed Fangio. He was a brilliant playcaller and we had a great defense under him. The other defensive coaches, I don't think were very qualified to coach at the NFL level, personally. Saleh seems to be a quick study. I like his schemes, they are very simple. Simple is good, but you better have the talent or opposing offense can take advantage of the simplicity of the defensive schemes. There is not much deception in the 4-3 under, unlike the 3-4 zone blitz, which has a lot of ways to fool the QB by design. The question I have for Saleh is - is his main objective to limit yards, points, or get turnovers? Each one of those principle objective needs a different scheme to execute. So far I haven't read or heard of anything regarding what his defensive objectives are.

All you need to know about the foundation of this defense per Coach Z:

3. "I've told all the guys, 'You've got to know at least two positions just because of the numbers on gameday.' I don't want to pigeonhole a guy at one spot."

This is my favorite line! I expect this D to be very difficult to play because they can put so many looks on the field. The DBs are big, small, fast, crafty, vets, rookies...and the DL and LBs are the same, though all are still younger than many teams.

Totally! Depending on how you see the 53 shaping up, here's an idea of the versatility Saleh has to work with:

DeForest Bucker - Can play at LDE/5T, NT & RDT/3T
Earl Mitchell; D.J. Jones - Can play at NT & RDT/3T (Mitchell)
Solomon Thomas; Ronald Blair - Can play at LDE/5T, RDT/3T and perhaps, some LEO
Arik Armstead - Can play all 4 DL positions
Elvis Dumervil; Eli Harold - Can rush from either end position now
Aaron Lynch; Pita Taumoepenu - Can rush from either end position
Ahmad Brooks; Dekoda Watson - Can rush from either end position
Navarro Bowman; Ray-Ray Armstrong - Can play WILL, MIKE or SAM (if needed too)
Malcolm Smith; Reuben Foster - Can play WILL & MIKE; Smith also played SAM
Dontae Johnson; Ahkello Witherspoon - Can play either outside CB position; Dontae learned FS last year
K'Waun Williams; Will Redmond - Can play at the slot or outside
Rashard Robinson - Can play either outside CB position
Jimmie Ward; Lorenzo Jerome - Can play either outside CB position, slot or FS
Eric Reid; Jaquiski Tartt - Can play either the traditional SS or in-box SS; Reid can play FS as well

It is this right here which is going to cut down on a LB having to play SS, or a CB filling in at LB...we had 2nd string guys playing most of the yr, and many flat out were not able to do the job required of them. Bow's injury really hurt, because he was the leader. But when AA finally sat down, (should have been about 6 games before) we were really hurting. Plus the guys who filled in had gotten precious few snaps, and those were on the 2nd team. I think the idea itself is a great one. BUT, BUT...last yr we flat out did not have the talent to rotate every 5 plays. We just didn;t have talent last yr.. And that is what makes this team so fascinating this yr. We may realistically have guys in rotations that have enough talent TO rotate. We couldn't have even imagined doing that last yr. It also gives you and idea of just how good this D may very well be. If we truly can rotate every 5 plays, then we may have a D that can dominate. But, until TC and PS, nothing really counts. Everything is "IF" this and"IF" that. I am anxious to see the OL but the front 7? That is where the real surprise may come from.
Just

GO FOR IT!

Send the whole 7 man front at the QB.

They can't block everybody.

Interesting comments from John Lynch about Bowman noting that in this scheme, he'll be dropping back a lot in zone coverage and then attacking and whether that fits his skills.

We've heard and read strong hints that the 49ers would be zone coverage based, at least on 1st/2nd downs. As a Hook zone defender, Bow will make his zone drop to take away the intermediate, then when the QB throws underneath, he needs to come up to make the tackle for minimal RAC. Typical duties of a Cover3 Hook zone defender.
