Week 5: Home vs. Kansas City

Overview: Win 22-17
It was another up-and-down game for our offense. Our defense played well after the first drive by KC. We only had 2 penalties, which was a stark improvement from the previous 4 games. Add that to 0 turnovers, 0 burned TO, and no missed FGs, we had a pretty clean game.

Our pass protection was spotty, leading to multiple stalled drives. We need to finish off these drives with TDs, as most opponents will capitalize on our lack of TDs in the Red Zone.

Gore and Hyde were awesome, great vision, toughness, and very good run blocking by our O-line. On defense, we held them in check for the most part, but we still give up long 3rd down conversions from time-to-time. Lynch had another great game, I'm very excited about him, and our defensive front in general played well. We still need more of a pass rush, which may not come til Aldon gets back.

Kap did have some bone-headed plays, but he also showed some touch on some throws during the game. As long as our running attack is flourishing, he should be fine.

Big picture, we're 3-2 and heading to a MNF game against a very beatable Rams team. We need another W, as our division will be as tough as advertised.

Penalties:
Ahmad Brooks:
1. Neutral Zone Infraction, 5 yard penalty
- Comment: On 1st down, Brooks give the Chiefs a 1st and 5, which they convert and eventually score. However, the Chiefs were already driving and were on the SF 22 yard line before the penalty, so it's difficult to ascertain the outcome. It may have contributed to a TD instead of a FG.

Mike Iupati:
1. False Start, 5 yard penalty
- Comment: Tough penalty as we had put together a great drive with pickups of 18, 16, 9, and 13 in the previous 4 plays. This penalty contributed to the drive stalling out and forcing a FG.

Total: 2

Turnovers:

Total: 0

Sacks (Attributed):
1. Johnathan Martin:
- Comment: After the false start put us behind the 8-ball, Martin got beat by Houston.

2. Mike Iupati:
- Comment: Shotgun by Kap, Iupati gets beat quickly by the blitz, but we were in 3rd and 19, so just a tough series all around.

3. Mike Iupati / Alex Boone:
- Comment: Great pressure by Poe. Boone is filling in for Staley at this point. This forced a 3 and out, after we forced KC 3 and out on their previous drive.

Total: 3

Missed FGs/PATs:

Total: 0

Missed 2-pt Conversions:

Total: 0

Missed 3rd Down Opportunities:
1. 3rd and 5:
- Comment: Kap attempts a short pass out to the right to Johnson, but the pass falls incomplete. This missed opportunity took a TD off the board, as the next play was a FG (see Missed Red Zone Opportunities).

2. 3rd and 9:
- Comment: Kap hit a huge gainer to Lloyd on 3rd down earlier in the drive, but an incomplete pass and a well-defended WR screen put us in 3rd and long, and Kap/McDonald were unable to connect. Good defense by Abdullah on the play. Led to another FG: 7-6 at that point.

3. 3rd and 3
- Comment: First drive after half, with the momentum going into half, we come out and go 3 and out. Kap tries to pick up the first, but is denied. Good, sound defense by Hali. This 3 and out leads to a TD by KC.

4. 3rd and 19:
- Comment: Just a brutal set of downs, culminating in a sack. We were lucky to get a FG on that drive.

5. 3rd and 16:
- Comment: 3 and out, and the 3rd and long was forced by the sack. Kap couldn't connect with Boldin on the deep pass.

6. 3rd and 1:
- Comment: Gore gets bottled up at the point of attack by #96 Howard, Boone missed block. However, we fake the punt on the next play, so this in an inconsequential missed opportunity.

7. 3rd and 10:
- Comment: Kap hit Boldin on the short underneath route and Boldin is held up just short of the sticks. Good play by Mauga on KC to prevent the first down. This is another FG instead of a TD.

8. 3rd and 1:
- Comment: Another Gore short yardage stuff. Give credit to the KC LB for well-timed blitz. This 3rd down is inconsequential because KC blows it on 4th down and gives us an automatic 1st.

9. 3rd and 12:
- Comment: Conservative play call as we were in FG range and trying to kill the clock. But the play seemed doomed from the get-go.

Total: 9

Missed Red Zone Opportunities:
1. 1st down on the 18:
- Comment: After running Hyde and Gore and a big gainer by Boldin, we had plenty of momentum. But faced with 3rd and 5, we couldn't convert. Instead of matching the 7pts put up initially, we start down 7-3.

2. 1st down on the 20:
- Comment: After what may have been our best drive leading up to this play, we start out with a false start, then sack, then negative rush, then sack. At least Dawson hit the FG to salvage that brutal series of plays.

3. 1st down on the 18:
- Comment: Following a great run by Gore, Kap misses the dump off to Hyde, then Hyde gets bottled up for no gain, and on 3rd down we come up just short of the sticks resulting in another FG.

4. 1st down on the 9:
- Comment: We're in full clock-killing mode at this point, but back to back poor running plays backs us up to 3rd and goal from the 12. And Kap missed Boldin on a short route that may not have even been able to score anyway. Leads to another FG. But this FG did push our lead above 3, forcing KC to need a TD.

Lol blaming Lee for his punt getting blocked.

I know, but it was a turnover and he's the only player that can be associated with it. Skuta blew his assignment that led to the block.

I realize that it's unfair to blame him, if you have a better idea, let me know...

I know it's not the way things work, but the guy most responsible for that blocked punt is Alex Boone.

It was the RG position, but I believe it was Dan Skuta who was manning that position. I could be wrong, but I'm almost certain it was #51.

Skuta was making up for the missed block by someone else. Watch it again. He's forced to try and stop two people.

Agreed. It was the long snapper Nelson that caused Skuta to have to take on two rushers.

So it was ultimately Boone who missed his block, forcing Skuta into an impossible position of blocking two people, which then led to the block?

After looking at it from that angle, it looks like both Skuta and Nelson blew their assignments. Skuta was pushed back too far into Lee's kicking area, and Nelson just whiffed on his block.

And thanks! These threads will be significantly more meaningful as the season goes on and we can spot trends easier. I'm planning on doing a BYE week synopsis so we can see how our team is progressing in these areas.

And thank you for all your work. You're a driving force on the Zone since you started here!
