No accounting for some folks.

Yeah, isn't that hilarious. Kolb . Smith is far better than Kolb, and it's really not even close. How some people think that they're on the same level or Kolb is even better, baffles me.

Having said that, I hope that we trade Alex Smith to the Jets and get Revis (on a one year deal) in exchange. He'd definitely play a hell of a lot better than Sanchez . And I'd like to see Alex Smith whoop Tom Brady's ass twice a year

No one is saying that. What's incorrect is to think Smith will warrant the same type of money as Kolb or Flynn did on the sole reason that that was what teams gave up for them.

There is a huge difference in why those teams acquired those guys:
Those teams considered them as possible franchise QBs whereas Smith is not.

That's just reality, it doesn't mean one is said to be better than the other.

There was a guy on here that I was arguing with some pages back that was saying Kolb and Fitzpatrick are as good or better than Alex Smith.

I think you just responded to him.

The timing of this story is curious. Alex wants the Niners to do him a solid, but his camp leaks this a weak before the Super Bowl. That's not in the best interest in the team, especially considering that one injury to Kaep makes Alex next in line to lead this team to victory. IMO, he needs to be concentrating on the game like every other teammate and worry about the offseason come Monday morning.

Alex has endured a lot with this team, and it's unfortunate that he didn't get to lead us to the big game, but he's been well compensated over the years, and has been put in a situation to showcase his skills and be a starter for another franchise. Two years ago, it was a cold market for Alex. Fast forward and I think it's fair to say the organization has done a lot for the guy. No hard feelings, Alex, but the business is about putting the best product on the field for the fans.

I may have read a different article than you, but what I read didn't suggest it came from Smith at all. Merely a prediction piece, filler before the SB.
"Alex Smith is likely to ask for his release." -- seems like a weak opening, with no real substance.

Yeah, I don't know either way. To me it sounds like a play by his agent. Releasing a story during the media frenzy that Super Bowl week is, seems intentional. Regardless, this is really a non-story. Of course Smith would rather be released. Water is also wet. I don't see why this was picked up unless someone in his camp wanted it to be picked up at this particular time.

Possible his agent is trying to get an early start on seeing who may be interested. I don't have a problem with it. I don't think the team would be distracted by it. I'm sure they all saw the writing on the wall once CK was named the starter.

or PFT's (Florio) "sources" are full of s**t. sites are vying for as many clicks as a possible during the SB.

You are right that we also need to look at it on a team needs basis. But wasn't that already done last year? MIA went 7-9, 6-10, and 7-9 in the last 3 years. They were considered a fairly solid team and needed a QB. They passed up on Alex Smith for Gerrard.

Andy Reid is KC's head coach. He was never a coach that played his QB's as "game managers." We will see if a coach that LOVES him some dynamic passing...we will see how hard he desires Alex, a QB who is not a dynamic passer.

Miami didn't pass on Alex. Philbin made it obvious Alex wasn't that interested in signing with Miami.

We had a great visit and we'll leave it at that," Philbin said. "Any relationship takes two sides to tango and you should certainly ask him about that. But I have nothing but good things to say about our visit. Really enjoyed it."

"He's a first-class individual and he's an excellent football player," Philbin said of Smith. "You could tell he's a team guy, unselfish guy. He loves the game and is passionate about football. Really good person. Really enjoyed my time with him."

If possible I hope we trade him instead of cutting him. This is a business and if it means we can get a pick out of it, I'd take that over getting nothing.

My thoughts too; Smith is no saint and to be sure, he must look out for his future. Right now the best interest of the TEAM and Alex are identical - win the SUper Bowl. Great for the team.. #6 and Great for ALex he laid the foundation for the team being in the SB.

Lmao
I thought that the Alex requesting a release was only rumor started by the media.

Davis is a straight line runner with speed but offers very little else as a pass receiver. That may not be popular here but it is the truth. He is a very good blocker but so was Billy Bajema. Celek is a better all round receiver. He reads defenses well. He finds the open spots and he catches the ball well with his hands. He also shields defenders away from the ball better. Davis gets too much credit for his speed over his pass receiving liabilities.

Moss, at one time was the equivalent of Jerry Rice in his prime but right now he is Jerry Rice in his final season.

Manningham in his best year was maybe as much of a threat as Maclin, otherwise, I would take Maclin in a heartbeat.

In just nine more games, Davis has twice as many TDs and almost 1000 more yards than Celek. Davis is a better receiver than Celek.

100% agree. They may have more big plays, but we have better consistency and durability.
I'm sure it's just a scumbag agent ploy to make Alex more marketable.

However I hope the 49ers try and get something for him, anything. Even a 4th rounder could help.

Alex has over 50M reasons not to be too hurt at the 49ers if they don't release him early. He has been well compensated over the years, good and bad.
I think it will all come down to whether or not the Niners can trade him in that 48 hour window prior to the $8 million becoming guaranteed. If they can they will trade him, if not he gets released.

he wasnt interested, im sure, because he wanted to play for the 49ers..who wouldnt coming off your best year...also, any qb looking at miami had to look at their having the 8th pick and ryan tannehill's college coach being the o-coordinator

It is pretty obvious what happened. I honestly can't understand why people are trying to pretend like anyone thought Alex was actually available. Everyone knew that unless the Niners Signed Peyton Manning he would be back. The Peyton Manning thing also happened after a bunch of QB situations had been decided, so there was really only Seattle (who was in the middle of signing a QB at the time) and Miami as legitimate options. That is why there was no real interest in him, and that makes those quotes by Philbin crystal clear.

That being Said Alex should have more suitors this year because he is obviously NOT going to be back with the Niners. If he doesn't get traded I think he'll have 3 or 4 legitimate options, and maybe one or two that are not being talked much about. All the best to him, but these are conversations for after the Superbowl. for now Smith needs to keep coaching up Colin and keeping himself ready just in case.
