I wonder if JH really wants fangio back. If not, tomsula, donatell, and would love to have Lovie, but he will get another HC job soon. fangio has good games, and then not so good. His main problem is he won't blitz, even when blitzes are crying out to happen. That is a way to coach conservatively, not aggressively, and not to win a SB. He likes prevent D, and we all saw what that did in ten minutes in NE. It got us scored on by 28 pts. nah, if fangio leaves, isn't going to hurt my feelings. Thing is, rarely do DCs take over for HC. We did it with noln, and we know how that worked out. OTher DCs, like wade phillips, are great dCs, just not HCs.
Bill Belichick
Mike Tomlin
Pete Carroll
John Fox
Jeff Fisher
Mike Smith
Leslie Frazier
all disagree with you....amongst others.
All of these guys except for Frazier have long careers as somewhat successful coaches previously in NFL. Of this list only 4 are retreads. Bellicheck, Carroll, Fox and Fisher. Of this group 3 had their teams in the big game. Tomlin is the exception but I'd say he's more a product of a great organization - but he as multiple SB championships on his tenure.
I'd say the bar is MUCH higher for defensive coaches than it used to be given the flops with Nolan, Crennel, Schwartz, Singletary and Spagnulo. You won't see these guys get offered a second chance anytime soon regardless of how effective their defenses are - same with Fangio and others. It's an offensive league gents so you'll see more NFL clubs look at college coaches especially given the success the 49ers have had with our own Harbaugh.
