Trade the best TE in the league? Nope. Our coaching staff fail to use him in a similar manor like New Orleans and New England. AND the other team focuses a lot on him.
Not this season.Originally posted by PTulini:

As of now, I'd put Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, Tony Gonzalez, Aaron Hernandez, Heath Miller, and even Jason Witten ahead of him.

Nope. Not if we would actually pass him the ball. All his yards and TD's are in the first half of the season. Double that. That's what he was on pace for. But we made a QB change and no longer throw to him. Some of the players you list have Tom Brady and Drew Brees throwing to them. If you don't see a difference between that and our QB rotation I don't know what to tell you?

They are using him to be a beast blocker and to draw coverage.
What TE is a better blocker?

Davis' lack of production is due in part to the fact that the 49ers are still very limited at the WR position. Crabtree is a very good possession receiver but not the overall speed guy that demands a safety over the top all the time. Hence, opponents can cover Davis underneath with LBs and a safety over the top. This is what a lot of teams have done and it takes him out of the play. This situation demands fixing before next season. Hopefully Jenkins will be that deep speed threat to take the safety away from Davis, however, until that is done, he will continue to draw double coverage. IOW, his lack of production in this area is not his fault.
The second area is his fault to a degree. Vernon is not a very agile guy. He does not move sell in tight spaces. He is a huge downfield threat but not in the traditional role of a TE. What Harbaugh/Roman should do is to motion him, slot him, flank him, use him in ways other than the typical college profile TE. Personally, I think Roman does not understand the type of weapon he potentially has in Davis.
A third factor is that Harbaugh is such a staunch proponent of his power running game that he is willing to sacrifice Davis' passing catching threat in order to help make the run game go. What the 49ers need is to develop another TE that can run those under routes AND block well in those heavy sets.
I believe that if Baalke/Harbaugh find that deep threat guy to take the lid off the defense, it will open up the offense for Davis and the 49ers as a whole.

No but we can trade or cut Walker.
We do need another TE that can catch and hold onto the dam ball. Walker has made some decent grabs but has really cost us at crucial times over the last couple of years.
Would love a Brent Jones type opposite of VD. We'd be unstoppable like the Pats.

Vernon helped out big time to get Bowman extended. He needs to get more comfortable with Kap. Yes it can be done, wouldn't be good. June 1 would allow to cut bonus over 2 seasons, but to get value you trade before june 1st to get a good pick, so it's a 50-50 thing.
