has it been mentioned why this guy? Wouldnt a younger, faster player be a better fit? I think the team went with a more seasoned vet like a Takeo whos seen it all and has been different systems than a rookie or younger player.

We are fine on LB, if we have any injuries we have Dobbs, and Miller who can fill in for LB in a pinch, There is also Gooden and Grant. There is no need to panic.

Lol pass rushing OLBs? Brooks and Aldon are what exactly?

If they can squeeze one more decent season of good play from Haggans, the dude might just be one of the luckiest SOB. To go from being released by the Cards--you don't want to be with the Cards this year with their qb situation-- to help a SB contender win a SB. With Spike still playing at 35 I think Haggans can do it too. The injury to Haralson might end up being a good thing. Haggans' play might end up being better than Parys. And I think it might get Aldon more focused in learning the position faster to help the team. Because now there's urgency without Haralson.

I think we still need one more OLB. How is Cam Johnson so far with the injury...

He didn't look ready to me. I don't think he can hold point against the run.

We really need to look at the two OLB positions as being very different (SAM & WILL). Haggans is a solid veteran who would spell mostly Aldon's WILL spot (80% pass rush from the blind side next to Justin Smith). He's a seasoned veteran and he won't be playing that many snaps but enough to keep Aldon fresh throughout the year. Clark is a veteran and will understand where/when to drop back in zones and with Justin, Brown and Willis on that side, I'm not too worried about run defense with him in there.
Now, the SAM side? This worries me. This is the strong side and there are two-times the responsibilities on this side. This position is equally challenged between dropping back in zone (b/c this is the side the TE/FB's typically line up and where runs are made off tackle). Therefore, whoever is playing this side will have to know when to drop back in zone, when to cover a TE underneath and on the outside, when to push his man upfield and seal the edge and when to pass rush from the QB's sightline. To me, Haralson would have filled the run-stuffing duties decently but he is worthless in coverage and in pass rushing and sometimes he can be beat by faster backs on the edges b/c he can't push his blocker upfield far enough.
So who do we turn to for the SAM? Dobbs seems like a guy who can get some penetration and who is stout against the run. But he's been playing RDE/WILL all off season and I don't know if he could handle the SAM position yet. Cam? Same thing...raw skill set but if Brooks goes down, I'm worried b/c we may have to shift our entire defensive game plan.
This isn't Madden where you can just plug in any dude.

Nice overall post. For the SOLB, I must say that I was impressed with Bakhtiari when it came to the strongside run anchoring, but also impressed with his ability and knowledge of where to drop in zone or man coverages. Still think he would be a wise choice as SOLB backup... but perhaps Fangio sees this differently than I do.

In two games he did get some pretty good pressure, and no I'm not saying this cause hes from Hawaii, but if you've watch the games he did get good pressure.
If he were a starter I don't think he'd get more than 3-4 sacks in a season... But he has some pass rush skills, better than Rowe I think, I think he's a better run stopper than LaBoy, and just overall enough experience to be a solid 1-2 year backup
Agreed, a solid bench player and situational pass rusher. It just doesn't make sense to me that they signed a player that could be possibly suspended the first 3 games. Haggans hasn't even been with the team this off-season, at least Rowe, Bahktiari and Alama-Francis have been.

I'm glad you posted on this topic...I can honestly say (rare for me) that I did not pay much attention to the OLB's this pre season and spent more time on the OL instead. So any analysis, I'm all ears.
From my passive watching, Bak seemed like a decent find. Did you see him strong/big enough to push OT's or TE's up field on the strong side so that RB's were forced to go way back and around him to get to the edge or back inside where the additional help is (Bowman/Willis)? I think I saw him play more SAM than WILL right? He did well in dropping back...pass rush seemed consistent (closing speed/ability?). How did he do on disengaging blocks? Does he have an array of pass rush moves? Keeps his eyes on the QB the entire time (esp. when he is being blocked)?

Love this attitude, and if Miller fills in for OLB I would marry him and have his babies.
