Ooops
Tolzien is gone
Maybe I'm the only one who thinks so, but the competition for that fourth OLB spot got alot more interesting last night.

Alama-Francis, No. 47 looked really good, to me, and played his way into consideration. Bakhtiari has had a great preseason. Neither of them has any PS eligibility.

Alama-Francis is 6"5" and 290!! Bakhtiari is 6"3" and 250.

Alama-Francis appears to have some really impressive physical skills, and appeared to have a good grasp on the OLB position last night. He pressured the QB, set the edge on running plays, and looked good in coverage. With his size, he was able to bull rush and stunt with the DL. I thought he was impressive.

Bakhtiari has done all of that, although he's not as strong on the bull rush.

An then theres Kenny Rowe, at 6"3" and 230 who appeared to have a good outside pass rush, but still seems a bit undersized.

My guess is that Cam Johnson gets waived, then goes to the PS. He looked like he needs to bulk up his upper body, and its unlikely that any other team will nab him, given his medical history. Rowe's probably a goner, he's just too light.

So the choice comes down to Bakhtiari vs. Alama-Francis. It will be interesting to see which one sticks. Based on last night's game, I'm rooting for Alama-Francis, who appears to have great potential. Bakhtiari is a great story, and appears to give everything he's got on every play, but he's as good as he's gonna get. IMHO. Still, he might be a good locker room guy and ST contributor. We shall soon see.

I agree. I would much rather keep Alama-Francis than Bakhtiari. I don't see us opening the season with 4 OLB's on the roster though. I do think Alama-Francis could be brought back after week 1. I think the 49ers will open the season with four QB's on the roster but after week 1 or 2 Josh Johnson or Tolzien will be released. My money is on Tolzien not making it through but he could be brought back on the PS.

lol. While you're replying to my post in this thread, I was replying to your's in the other thread.

It looks like we agree on Alama-Francis' abilities. I don't think they'll try to finess it, I think they'll just cut Tolzien and hope he'll clear waivers, then put him on the PS. They're gonna need a 4th OLB, and Alama-Francis looks like a talented, versatile guy, that they'll keep instead of Tolzien.

Ian Williams will make the team. Person, Jones, Brock, Robinson, and Reuland are the bubble guys on your list. I think Rock has a shot to make the team ahead of Colin Jones or at the expense of one of the aforementioned guys. I think we sign an OLB from someone else's cuts also at the expense of one of those guys.

My thinking is this. We don't need another NT, Williams will never see the field. Jones is my #53 but he makes it because he will actually contribute to ST and that is something we really need with the loss of Costanzo. I also think we need a real TE in Reuland and can't count on Dobbs. Reuland doesn't need to suit up on game days, Dobbs can cover for any injuries during a game. But if VD or Walker get a serious injury I don't want Dobbs to be our fulltime TE with how much we run 2 TE sets, would rather have a real TE on the roster.

But you are right Cartwright or Jones could possibly swap, I just want a special teamer at the end of my 53 man since they will actually play. Does Williams have PS eligibility?

As to OLBs; I also like A-F and Bakhtiari, however, I am thinking the 49ers will look hard at the cuts later today to find a pass rushing specialist. If these PS games have shown us nothing else, it has shown us that without Aldon and Brooks on the outside, this team cannot put heat on an opposing QB. With all the top-level QBs the 49ers will be facing this season, pass rush will be critical to victories in all those games. Consequently, I don't think any of the candidates for the 4th OLB spot should be very comfortable with their spot through the first couple of weeks. If a pass rusher becomes available, they will cut someone to make room. Just my opinion...

TE- Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker and Demarcus Dobbs
OL- Jonathan Goodwin, Joe Staley, Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati, Alex Boone, Leonard Davis and Daniel Kilgore

OLB- Ahmad Brooks, Aldon Smith and Parys Haralson

Thats 43 active, with 3 spots left.

1 is 4th Safety, between Trenton Robinson and Michael Thomas, I prefer to keep both and let Brock go.

If we keep a 4th OLB then thats Eric Bakhtiari

Tough decision between a 4th OLB, Ian Williams or Colin Jones on roster(53 and active).

Inactive- QB Tolzien/Johnson, WR Williams, WR Jenkins, RB James, OL Looney, OL Person and CB Brock

Still not sold on Dixon, I think he is probably on the roster, but I don't think it;s set in stone.

Can't decide between Johnson and Tolzien. Rooks Jenkins, James and Looney are inactive, Kyle Williams may be active, but Maiocco said only 4 active WRs. I am not sold Brock will be on 53 man, but for now he is, until someone better comes along.
Again and still with Rock over both Dixon and Williams. Ugh.

A thought just occurred to me regarding the potential log jam of defensive linemen; the NFL and NFLPA just agreed on a new rule to allow one player placed on IR to return later in the season. So depending on the severity of Dobbs leg injury, they might place him on IR and designate him as the "return" player, thereby freeing a spot for Williams. RJF has played well at DT so keeping Williams under this scenario would make sense.

Williams has played quite well in PS. He doesn't have quite the strength of Sop but who does. With another year to gain strength to go with his already good technique, he would be good insurance against the potential of losing Sop and/or RJF next season.

Thats old, I updated a new one, I have Dixon on roster, but yes Kyle is looking from the outside in. 4 WRs/KRs are better than him, Moss, Crabs, Mario and Ginn. We could very well keep 5, but at what expense, we likely keep 6 DL active, with Dobbs as hybrid, maybe we keep only 7 LBs active or total so possibility.
