Ginn will make this team. Palmer and Owusu will not.
My 46 man active game day roster if everyone is healthy.

QB- Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick
RB- Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, Brandon Jacobs and Rock Cartwright
FB- Bruce Miller
WR- Michael Crabtree, Randy Moss, Mario Manningham and Ted Ginn Jr.
TE- Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker and Demarcus Dobbs
OL- Jonathan Goodwin, Joe Staley, Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati, Alex Boone, Leonard Davis and Daniel Kilgore
DE- Justin Smith, Ray McDonald and Will Tukuafu
NT- Isaac Sopoaga and Ricky Jean Francois
OLB- Ahmad Brooks, Aldon Smith and Parys Haralson
ILB- Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Larry Grant and Tavares Gooden
CB- Carlos Rogers, Tarell Brown, Perrish Cox and Chris Culliver
S- Dashon Goldson, Donte Whitner and C.J. Spillman
ST- David Akers, Andy Lee and Brian Jennings

Thats 43 active, with 3 spots left.

1 is 4th Safety, between Trenton Robinson and Michael Thomas, I prefer to keep both and let Brock go.

If we keep a 4th OLB then thats Eric Bakhtiari

Tough decision between a 4th OLB, Ian Williams or Colin Jones on roster(53 and active).

Inactive- QB Tolzien/Johnson, WR Williams, WR Jenkins, RB James, OL Looney, OL Person and CB Brock

Still not sold on Dixon, I think he is probably on the roster, but I don't think it;s set in stone.

Can't decide between Johnson and Tolzien. Rooks Jenkins, James and Looney are inactive, Kyle Williams may be active, but Maiocco said only 4 active WRs. I am not sold Brock will be on 53 man, but for now he is, until someone better comes along.

Depends on how healthy we are at certain positions.

If Aldon is 100% or close to it, my money is on Williams. They've been working him at DE and he's listed as the second string NT. He's been playing pretty well this preseason.

We'll see though. I wouldn't even say I'm 100% Williams or Jones make the roster right now.

It's really frustrating, but I just can't seem to read Harbaugh's mind!
Colin Jones will be cut....

Sucks.... I got his autograph at fan fest on the same football as Kap's.... Magic eraser time.

Probably.

Just wait a bit to make sure he's done in the league before erasing though. Would be a funny keepsake if he catches on with another team and lights it up.

Isn't the 46th guy always the third QB? You're the rules expert, you know better

I agree with your 46 almost to the letter. I honestly think JJ makes it over Tolzien (I'm not saying what *should* happen, but what probably will). I think Colin Jones makes it and perhaps dresses for ST. OTOH do we dress 8 DBs on game day?

Use to be 45 plus the 3rd QB as one of the 8 inactives, but under new CBA it's 46 with no 3rd QB unless he is one of the 46 men.

I don't know how many DBs we go with.

I wouldn't mind these Rogers, Brown, Goldson, Whitner, Spillman, Cox, Culliver, Robinson and Thomas, thats 9, I would assume Jones is cut then, so Thomas and Robinson can play STs and Thomas can be nickel DB, CB/S type of guy.
Thanks. That's one of the rule changes I missed :)

OK, another way to go about the 46 is, who are the 9-10 non-specialists on STs?
Here's my FINAL list.

Final 53 man would be IMO

QB(3)- Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick and Josh Johnson*
RB(5)- Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, Brandon Jacobs, Anthony Dixon and LaMichael James
FB(1)- Bruce Miller
WR(6)- Michael Crabtree, Randy Moss, Mario Manningham, Ted Ginn Jr., Kyle Williams* and A.J. Jenkins*
TE(2)- Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker
C(2)- Jonathan Goodwin and Daniel Kilgore
OG(4)- Mike Iupati, Alex Boone, Leonard Davis and Joe Looney*
OT(3)- Joe Staley, Anthony Davis and Mike Person*
DE(4)- Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Demarcus Dobbs and Will Tukuafu
NT(2)- Isaac Sopoaga and Ricky Jean Francois
OLB(3)- Ahmad Brooks, Aldon Smith and Parys Haralson
ILB(4)- Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Larry Grant and Tavares Gooden
CB(5)- Carlos Rogers, Tarell Brown, Chris Culliver, Perrish Cox and Tramaine Brock*
S(5)- Dashon Goldson, Donte Whitner, C.J. Spillman, Trenton Robinson and Michael Thomas
ST(3)- David Akers, Andy Lee and Brian Jennings

Final Spot is tough, would be between Ian Williams, Eric Bakhtiari and Rock Cartwright. I would not be surprised if we keep 7 backs, yes 7 backs. With James inactive, he doesn't seem ready yet.

Inactive for sure: QB Johnson, WR Williams, WR Jenkins, OG Looney, OT Person, CB Brock and then between Ian, James and Bak. Rock would be active for STs.

Some notes, guys who stood out to me, Dixon, Gooden, Robinson, Cox, Cully, Tukuafu, Spillman, Delanie. All look as locks. Guys who I would look waiver wise, Brock and maybe Thomas. Keep McBath maybe, he played well tonight also.

PS: WR Owusu or Palmer, TE Reuland, C Beeler, DL Masifilo or Ian Williams, LB Johnson, some DB maybe Thomas if cut. maybe 2 DL if only 6 DL on active. ILB Wilhoite or Holland.

add Williams and cut Thomas and Brock

If Ginn is still hurt week one which I expect both Williams and Jenkins should be active. LMJ and Jacobs (if still hurt) will be inactive as well.

Last spot goes to a TE. Reuland I guess.
I have it almost identical with AB, although I think that the wonderfully named Darcel McBath might cause a surprise and land the 10th DB spot since he can also play ST. I think Cartwright get cut since Dixon can do the ST work. Spot #53 is between Ian and Bakhtiari, and I think the latter gets it, although it's a tough choice. The rest is all identical with your list .
QB(3): Smith, Kaepernick, Johnson
RB(6): Gore, Hunter, Jacobs, James, Dixon, Miller
WR(6): Crabtree, Moss, Manningham, Ginn, Williams, Jenkins
TE(3): Davis, Walker, Reuland
OL(9): Staley, Iupati, Goodwin, Boone, Davis, Kilgore, Davis, Looney, Person

DL(6): Smith, Sopoaga, McDonald, RJF, Tukuafu, Dobbs
OLB(4): Smith, Brooks, Haralson, Bahktiari
ILB(4): Willis, Bowman, Grant, Gooden
CB(4): Rogers, Brown, Culliver, Cox
S(5): Goldson, Whitner, Spillman, Robinson, Jones

ST(3): Akers, Lee, Jennings

Inactives: Johnson, James, Jenkins, Looney, Person, Robinson, Bahktiari

Notables:

- Dixon has shown enough to bump off Cartwright
- Tolzein has shown enough promise to continue to be a project, but not enough that another team will snatch up him. They run the risk of stashing him on the practice squad, while keeping a guy who at least has history of starting in the NFL on the roster.
- Ian William's lack of versatility keeps him off the 53. He'll have a chance to play more DL positions on the practice squad.
- Dobbs injury shows that extra playing time also means increased injury risk, so they go with a true third TE while promising to still keep a rotation of defensive players as extra blockers.
- In order to keep a rotation at OLB, they keep Bahktiari as insurance
- Brock gets shown the door
- Cam Johnson played well last night but hasn't shown enough to earn a spot. He'll probably make it to the PS; if not, we still have Fleming next year.
- Colin Jones earns his way as a ST leader again.

i was thinking, hoping, predicting rock would make the team but you may very well be right. oh well i have been wrong before and if its best for the team, i am there
53 Man Roster Prediction:

QB (4): Alex Smith; Colin Kaepernick; Josh Johnson; Scott Tolzien (We will open the season with four QB's because I don't think the 49ers want to take a chance releasing Tolzien or Josh Johnson and the Packers end up picking one of them. I don't think we will finish the season with Four QB's on our 53 man roster. They may try to sneak Tolzien on the practice squad after week 1 or 2.

RB-FB (6): Frank Gore; Kendall Hunter; Brandon Jacobs; LaMichael James; Bruce Miller; Anthony Dixon (Dixon makes it over Cartwright after a good pre-season and the fact he can also play a little FB and is a good ST's player himself.)

WR (6): Michael Crabtree; Randy Moss; Mario Manningham; Ted Ginn Jr; Kyle Wiliams; A.J Jenkins (Most improved area on the team by far. Even our PS will be solid at WR. I hope we get both Osowu and Nathan Palmer on the PS)

TE (2); Vernon Davis; Delaine Walker; (Plus Dobbs can fill in as a blocking tight end. That is huge that Dobbs has show he can do the job as ablocking TE. Saves a roster spot)

O-Line (9): Joe Staley; Mike Iupati; Jonathan Goodwin; Alex Boone; Anthony Davis; Leonard Davis; Daniel Kilgore; Joe Looney; Mike Person (Good solid group. Good starters and some solid (young) backups with a solid veteran backup in Leonard Davis.

D-Line (7): Justin Smith, Issac Sopoaga; Ray McDonald; DeMarcus Dobbs; Ricky Jean-Francois; Will Tukafuku; Ian Williams (The first six are set in stone. The question is does Ian Wiliams make the team? I think he does because with Soaps becoming an UFA after this season, he could potentially be a starter or at least competing for the starting NT job next year. He has shown good progress. I really like Dobbs versatility along the D-Line.

LB's (7)- Aldon Smith; Ahmad Brooks; Patrick Willis; NaVorro Bowman; Larry Grant; Tavarris Gooden; Parys Haralson (Once again the team goes with only Three OLB's. Alama- Francis has played well in the two exhibition games with the 49ers and might be worth keeping around or could be brought back later. Bakhtiari has had a good pre-season but I don't think he is good enough to make THIS team.

DB's (9)- Carlos Rogers; Tarrell Brown; Chris Culliver; Perrish Cox; Tremaine Brock; Dashon Goldson; Donte Whitner; C.J Spillman; Darcell McBath (Really, really tough calls here. Trenton Robinson could very easily make the team but I think the 49ers will gamble a bit and try to get him onto their PS. I think McBath has earned the right to make the team. I could be wrong. Colin Jones could or could not make the team. He has great ST's value but really no position value. So it will be a tough call. I think Brock surives, barely but he could end up getting cut and Trenton Robinson makes the team. Some really tough choices here. If we cut Ian Williams than certainly I think Trenton Robinson and McBath make the team. If only keep 3 QB's then both guys make the team as well.

ST's (3)- David Akers; Andy Lee; Brian Jennings
