Webzoners Final 53 Man Rosters

instead of trenton robinson look for Michael Thomas to be a dark horse final 53 pick.

He can play nickel back, goal line back and safety. I do not believe Robinson can do that and Thomas has experience in the scheme. Keeping Thomas on the 53 would allow us to only carry 4 pure corners and use that spot on retaining Reuland as #3 TE while also keeping Dobbs in his usual back up DE roster spot.

Anything that allows us to Keep Rueland is a good plan , and I agree Thomas has a shot
i wouldn't be surprised if Colin Jones doesn't make it. I haven't even noticed him this preseason.

Our safety depth concerns me. None have stepped up.

I think Thomas has a tiny chance, definitely a dark horse. Why dont you think Robinson can play nickel, goal line, and safety? He was a much higher rated player coming out of college than Thomas.
We dont need to carry more than 4 pure corners. If someone gets hurt then we can make some moves and sign one.

Is there anyone who plays just on special teams that you have noticed? Jones might be our best special teams player, he'll be the guy Sealy would keep.

I would agree with this except for the fact that Goldson has been such a problem to sign. Hence, I expect to see Goldson gone next season and the 49ers invest a spot for Robinson with the hope of developing him into a solid backup or possible a starter. Baalke is only going to accept so much from Goldson before he just tells him to take his game playing somewhere else. At that point, the 49ers will need a more experienced player ready.

Of course, this will change if a serviceable vet winds up getting cut from some other team on Friday. In that case, Robinson may be released, but barring a situation of that nature, I believe the 49ers keep him, or at least try to get him through waivers and onto the PS.
5 safeties and only 4 corner backs?

Unless a good corner or safety is cut from another team yeah. Unless one of them get hurt.
We carried what, 5 corners last year? Spencer was active 2 games I think but we never had more than 4 active. We carried 6 safeties but this is where we carry less players so that we carry more receivers and running backs.

I think Ruland goes to the PS, here why He is a skill TE, we have two good ones already and need a blocking TE, that's Dobbs, if Davis or Walker goes down, we limp through the game, and call up Conrad for the next week. Saves a roster spot.

Agree, there is so many TE's in the league similar to Rheuland that I doubt he would get picked uip. The last 7 (inactives for the game) are basically PS players with bigger pay checks. In the above scenario you would need to carry 2 OL on the PS to be able to call up in case of injuries.

This would make room for another corner...

Yeah, we could vary well use CJ Spillman, Trent Robinson or another S in the dime packages as an extra DB instead of a CB. We did it with Reggie Smith for a few years.
My 53 Man Roster Prediction:

QB
11-Alex Smith
7-Colin Kaepernick
3-Scott Tolzien

RB
21-Frank Gore
32-Kendall Hunter
45-Brandon Jacobs
23-LaMichael James
49-Bruce Miller

WR
15-Michael Crabtree
84-Randy Moss
82-Mario Manningham
19-Ted Ginn
10-Kyle Williams
17-A.J. Jenkins

TE
85-Vernon Davis
46-Delanie Walker
40-Demarcus Dobbs

OL
74-Joe Staley
77-Mike Iupati
59-Jonathan Goodwin
75-Alex Boone
76-Anthony Davis
68-Leonard Davis
67-Daniel Kilgore
66-Joe Looney
78-Mike Person

DL
91-Ray McDonald
90-Isaac Sopoaga
94-Justin Smith
95-Ricky Jean Francois
92-Will Tukuafu
93-Ian Williams

OLB
99-Aldon Smith
55-Ahmad Brooks
98-Parys Haralson
44-Eric Bakhtiari - ST Ace

ILB
52-Patrick Willis
53-NaVorro Bowman
54-Larry Grant
56-Tavares Gooden - ST Ace

CB
22-Carlos Rogers
25-Tarell Brown
20-Perrish Cox
29-Chris Culliver
26-Tramaine Brock --> Replaced by best waiver wire option at 53 man cut down or acquired through trade (using Anthony Dixon or Josh Johnson as trade bait)

FS/SS
38-Dashon Goldson
31-Donte Whitner
27-C.J. Spillman - ST Ace
30-Trenton Robinson
32- Darcel McBath - ST Ace

ST
2-David Akers
4-Andy Lee
86-Brian Jennings

Practice Squad:
89-Nathan Palmer --> At Risk
81-Chris Owusu --> At Risk
88-Konrad Reuland
65-Al Netter
71-Derek Hall
63-Tony Jerod-Eddie
41-Cam Johnson
36-Michael Thomas

Notable Cuts
Anthony Dixon, Rock Cartwright, Josh Johnson (all players who don't possess much long term upside and are victim to simple numbers game)

While we lose some players who were previous special teams aces (notably: Cartwright, Dixon, and Jones), these players don't provide enough value as positional players to keep around and we have other ST aces to replace them (Bakhtiari, Gooden, Spillman, McBath), but provide more upside as solid second string positional players.

Can't really pick apart this prediction at all.

Even though we have added so much "depth" at the WR position why is that still the biggest question mark for me?

Probably just my preseason overreactions.

Jones and Spillman are beasts on Special Teams. I'm gonna miss Blake Costanzo
