who knows, but that's a legit question, which is strange

Yah it seems he is wearing #40 now. I also thought he looked pretty good at DL last year in the pre season.

At least his roster spot looks locked up. I was glad when he made the teams last year.

i like how Harbaugh is free up other positions to really keep the best players on the team
Dobbs was impressive in the last preseason. Seems to have impressed as a TE now too. Great for us. Put one of the Reuland/Byham kids on the PS and that opens up a spot.
a side note. i heard taylor mays is the starting SS for the bengals
a side note. i just seen that taylor mays is the starting SS for the bengals.

Unfortunately Byham is no longer PS eligible, my guess is unless Byham really impresses in preseason he's gone. Leaving Davis & Walker as the official TE's on the roser, Rueland to the PS, and Dobbs will be the 3rd backup at both DL & TE on active gameday roster. Since Dobbs is one of the few DL who isn't also working at NT, Harbs could've told him we aint keeping just a backup DE this year so he needed to learn another back up position too to help his chances of making the roster.

I think the first thing that Fangio did when he got to the team was to tell Baalke to trade Mays. Didn't look back since. Harbaugh and his staff played extensively against Mays at USC, so they knew exactly who he isn't.

What the heck? I thought camp was this morning? Where's the info?
Even though the defense has been dominant, Harbaugh has seen improvement from the offense. He's been happy to see the defense play well for the majority of training camp. "Our defense is playing extremely well," said Harbaugh. "If the offense was moving the ball down the field a lot, it would be a cause for a great concern. The fact our defense is making our offense better [and] the fact that there's 16 other teams that have to look down that gun barrel makes me the happiest guy in the world."

Here are the highlights and notes from day nine of training camp:

The first of three interceptions was recorded in one-on-one drills. A Tolzien comeback route intended for wide receiver Brett Swain was picked off by Pro Bowl cornerback Carlos Rogers. In the same period, Kaepernick hooked up with Ted Ginn Jr. on an impressive 25-yard back shoulder throw down the left sideline. -In the first team period of practice, the first-team offense faced the second-team defense while the starting defense faced the second-team defense on the adjacent practice field. In those periods, rookie guard Joe Looney did a nice job of lead-blocking against Patrick Willis. Meanwhile, Alex Smith connected with Kyle Williams on a 40-yard play-action pass on the opposite field.

-Red zone 7-on-7 work saw safety Mark LeGree break up a Tolzien pass intended for Ginn Jr. in the back of the end zone, and a touchdown pass between Johnson and first-year wideout Ben Hannula.

-In a move-the-ball period, second-team center Daniel Kilgore recorded a reception when Johnson's pass at the line was tipped and made its way into the second-year lineman's arms. Johnson was later intercepted by Culliver, who recorded his fourth interception of the past five practices. The first-team offense's drive was hampered by a first-down sack from second-team nose tackle Ian Williams. On third-and-15, Smith was intercepted to close out the drive when Perrish Cox picked off a high sideline pass intended for Randy Moss.

-Smith rebounded to complete several intermediate passes to tight end Vernon Davis in a later team period. In one scenario, Smith found Davis twice to set up a field goal. The two also hooked up on a 40-yard sideline pass in the final team period to earn play of the day honors.

Though the No. 2 competition between Kaepernick, Josh Johnson and Scott Tolzien is "fluid" according to the 49ers coach, games will serve as a major determining factor in deciding who starts the year behind Alex Smith. "They're all fighting for that job," Harbaugh said. The competition is close." The first of three interceptions was recorded in one-on-one drills. A Tolzien comeback route intended for Swain was picked off by Rogers. In the same period, Kaepernick hooked up with Ted Ginn Jr. on an impressive 25-yard back shoulder throw down the left sideline. In those periods, Looney did a nice job of lead-blocking against Willis. Meanwhile, Alex connected with Kyle W on a 40-yard play-action pass on the opposite field. Red zone 7-on-7 work saw Mark LeGree break up a Tolzien pass intended for Ginn Jr. in the back of the end zone, and a touchdown pass between Johnson and Ben Hannula. CK has been doing great, I think JJ will get cut while CK will have the starting job wrapped up in a couple of weeks.

CK will be so good that all the other QBs will flee to other teams just to get a fair shot of ever playing again.
