He might have been the best defensive player in the NFL last season, and certainly was the central figure in San Francisco's resurgence. Without his wrecking-ball presence, I can't help but wonder if those linebackers would be as effective. Among all defensive ends, Smith stands 12th in average per year, and when Julius Peppers sets the market at this position at $14 million a year, Smith is certainly worth more than half that. He'll cost the 49ers a very manageable $8 million in 2013. Guys like Calais Campbell will pull in $17 million in 2012 alone, including bonuses, and Glenn Dorsey will make more on a cash basis than Smith this season.

Back in 2008 Smith's contract was a big one, same year I believe Minnesota traded for Jared Allen. The Vikings I believe were in on Justin, and had a visit lined up but Justin never left SF without a contract.

yep, those numbers are accurate, some some of the language is different. This year is fully guaranteed, so he is basically a lock, unless he is terrible, even then he isn't heading anywhere, but after this year, if he is terrible, he can be cut and save 7.5M.

He has 1.25M in Incentives which are likely to be earned, and another unlikely to be earned $1.75M, which you had. He has a 1M roster bonus in 2013 offseason, so say he actually is let go before free agency, the team saves 8.5M against the cap. I also believe the incentives of $1.25M would go off the books too.

So based on this, it doesn't sound like anything needs to be done. Dude said he wants to play or has 3 more years and thats about the lenght of his contract. Sounds like he just plans to play it out....man are we blessed to have him.

He had a nice rookie contract and got paid here.

I was thinking this as well! Seems to work well with Baalke and they have kept the team in good salary cap position. Wonder what the new part owner contributes? Nice group of young guys in charge...hope they can all keep their egos in check.
