As much as I wanted PM in red and gold, when I heard the reason as to why he didn't come here I was shocked. He said he didn't want the pressure of super bowl or bust mode. In the end it's not his neck injury that's scary it's his lack of spine. For as talented he is, his younger brother has the bigger heart, and more ringsOriginally posted by JTsBiggestFan:Originally posted by English:Originally posted by Jakemall:Originally posted by English:Originally posted by Jakemall:Do not think that staying in the AFC was not a big part of his choice. Whilst you may well be right, one of the greatest qb's ever should not have been driven by this.
Ego and dollars.
I dunno. If had had 15 years of knowledge of defenses and all the habits of the players that are in those systems, I'd be reluctant to give it up. The margins between winning and losing are small and that kind of intel impacts a QB tremendously. If I'm one of the greatest QBs to ever play, I may want to try and retain the use of that info so that my last few years are less likely to hit the dumps and impact the way I am remembered.
You mean (as one of the greatest etc) a couple more Superbowls wouldnt have attracted you just a little bit.
Oh, come on, you know you want one really.
But no, for PM it ended up as being all about money.
Imo.
PM is ghey.

Instead , our guys did the right thing, stayed with the QB they had, and didn't permanently and irrevocably screw up our salary cap. We would have ended up like Denver, which has 1/4(or thereabouts) of their entire cap going to one guy, and that is after 3 neck surgeries. (As an aside, you don't do a 2nd and 3rd surgery if the 1st one went well).
So, here we are, brand new season, 7th yr qb , knows the Harbaugh (not Peyton) system perfectly, and we have the same D and ST as last yr, both #1, plus now we have added all the receivers, scatbacks, RBs, that we needed, got 3 good candidates to improve a less than perfect OL....and we are ready to make a legitimate run at the title. Had we acquired Peyton, good as he is, we wouldn't have been able to keep the D players we needed, nor could we have afforded all the O players added. Maybe for a yr, maybe not. But the good thing is , B& H did NOT sign Peyton, so all the above is just stuff we don't have to worry about. What I do wonder is, how is Denver going to carve out that much money when next yr comes around. They probably will have to raid the OL , DL , DBs, WRs, RBs, et al, just to be able to pay Peyton. In essence, scab the rest of the team just to pay their QB.
There are a few things in life, where if you decided NOT to do something really monumental, you came out a lot better than you would had you made that gamble.
It's true in new businesses, new acquisitions( of companies), and it is true in the NFL. Turns out our BEST move this yr...and there were a lot of them...was NOT to have signed Peyton. Hey, I got Peyton taking the Broncs to 8-8 this yr. God help 'em next yr...they are gonna need it.
Denver had a good D last year. they went 8-8 with Tebow. I think Manning, if healthy, is worth another 4 wins. Need to see ther schedule and all first. We wouldn't have been able to keep our D, the offensive pick ups would have been the same as they didn't cost us much. We would have drafted differently that is for sure. More D instead.

And that was the choice that Baalke made, Wild Bill, keep our D and ST intact, keep the O players we wanted, and we went out and got a slug of WRs, back up RBs, and even used our 2nd pick for a scatback, who probably will be the #1 receiver in yds, # of receptions, and definitely the YAC leader. We got depth all across the board, and have 13 picks next yr. With peyton, we would have not been able to keep the guys we needed on D, and we would not have been able to get a passel of WRs. Nah, we did the right thing. Peyton at a quarter of our Cap was not going to fly in SF. I thot and still do, H&B wanted to know if PM would come here at alex's salary $8mil for 3 yrs, and give up money for a SB shot...or two or 3. But that wasn't what peyton wanted. He got his control and he got his $$. More power to him. We got our team, and we all hope alex with his 5 or 6 WRs and scatback dancer split wide to his right, will bring us what we just missed last yr.

There's another thread called "2013 free agency" wherein AB83rules has identified the highest compensated 20 NFL players by position. We're now paying 10%, 53%, and 56% more than the Rams, Seahawks, and Cardinals respectively for players on that list. Peyton would have really driven the differences up or required us to release major players.

Yeah, smarti, it was going to be either peyton and a skeleton crew or how we ended up...which, honestly, is probably what most of us wanted once we knew what peyton's demands were. Thanks for the numbers reminder that AB had posted before. Also a reminder that we DO have a GM up there with the best of them, PLUS COY. With our new additions, especially filling the holes at WR and OL, plus the situational pick at #2, it is hard to see how we can't improve on last yr by 2 PR plays and 1 more game.

And here you go, JH has "cleared" it up, so to speak... I mean, he said the same thing he said before, but he said it again, later...

So, basically, he said :
a) 9ers couldn't or wouldn't have paid 1/6 (actually higher i think) of salary cap to one guy, Peyton manning or not.
b) main reason for the above is that then we couldn't have signed the guys we wanted on D, WRs, a scatback(RB), and a strong looking OL. He also gave alex cover by saying he was our QB going in as well as going out of talks.
There were other reasons, certainly, like Coach being the boss, not peyton, but overall, we covered pretty well in this thread what the PM thing was all about. My first lines were "it was a meeting to exchange information". There was more, but interesting how we mainly hashed out just exactly what was on B&H's minds.

if manning had wanted to come here, he'd be here. harbaugh is going to backtrack a bit for alex smith's delicate psyche and just generally to make it clear that manning was not plan a, b and c.
the main reasons i think manning didn't want to come here was probably because it would have been more a 50/50 blending of offensive systems vs. denver being willing to give him 100% control. harbaugh would have adjusted his offense to manning, but i don't think he would have scrapped everything for a guy that'll be around only a few years. second, there's serious pressure to win if he signs here. if he takes denver to a single playoff win, he'll be a hero. here, anything short of a super bowl is a disappointment.
i still say he made the wrong choice, this would have been his best shot at a ring.

yeah i think that would have been the biggest negative if peyton came here. he and harb's personalities i think would clash.

The salary cap clash with baalke, the clash with coach as to who is the coach...those are minor things. The big elephant in the living room is that peyton has no business playing football, and is playing with fire when it comes to injury, esp to his neck. 3 neck surgeries and he still wants to play? Wow that is just playing the odds, and they are stacked against him. I hope and pray peyton does not get injured this yr. If so, someone should be responsible for some incredibly bad medical advice.
Multiple neck surgeries just mean that something didn't go well. The why, the how, the who, the when...all are way down the list of importance. This is a guy, a super star, playing football...when he shouldn't.

The bold tells me all I need to know about your lack of objectivity. I do agree with your second paragraph though as to Manning wanting his own offense--but this is all conjecture, from everyone--not just you, as we don't have all the facts.
This could have been a PR move by the front office to show fans that the team was willing to do whatever it takes. But if so, it backfired somewhat. Still no big deal!
