Wouldn't say we drop the ball on offensive players, as the big ones are way way overpaid. VJax getting 55M, Garcon 42M, plus Bowe got tagged, Stevie Johnson re-signed before FA, same as Colston, Meachem went to SD for good money. What was left? Eddie Royal? not a big name guy, a Manningham type of name.

Also not mentioned, but I'm glad we stayed away from Nicks and Grubbs, both got 40M or more, ridiculous money. Especially for what would be a RG, when we will need to pay Iupati soon.

Baalke has been a master of personnel strategy.

The only thing that concerns me is Brooks. He is worth every penny, but I would rather put the money towards another position like OL, WR or QB. In the future, when Aldon signs his insane contract, we won't have any money left for WR, CB, OL, QB.

can't have too many pass rushers................

Can't have too many of anything.

For the next couple seasons, it will be awesome having Brooks and Aldon together. I'm just a little worried about the distant future. The contract allows us to cut him in in a few years and not suffer a huge cap hit, so its not like we're setting ourselves up for disaster.
But I agree, pass rushers are always worth it, even if it means we lose Iupati and Bowman in a few years.

Bowman I'd actually be more worried actually. Iupati.... i don't think he'll go.

based on what i've read here there are all kinds of ways that the cap can be adjusted. i confident Baalke will know how to play it.
The only thing this list doesn't show, is all the people on defense we retained this year.
AB, I have always been in favor of trading for quality WRs, or at least one. But the VJax thing, the outrageous numbers that Wallace wanted, etc, soured me on taking on such a huge financial liability for a guy who may or may not produce. But even if that hi price tag WR DID produce, it would thoroughly and permanently screw up our carefully crafted payroll, something we have really done well on , once baalke and Coach came along. Hi price tag wRs, no matter how good, nor how many catches , just are not worth it....something I had a completely different stance upon, only 2-3 yrs ago.

Yes. Personally I am also starting to question the wisdom of paying mega bucks to a Peyton Manning or whoever. Yes the qb is key. Yes he is vital. But the salary demands can fatally unbalance a team.

Especially if you are wrong. Even if you are right it may not lead to more rings. Look at the Patriots they gave Brady his first big contract in I think 2005. Now they have had success but no Super Bowl wins. Their defense has been a question mark and a part of that is the fact that such a high portion of their cap is spent on one player. Brady may be worth it but their are only a handful of QBs that are the main key to their teams success and it seams their success rate is early in their career before their cap number effects the team.
So there the saints are, no HC, no DC, temporary HC is asst coach who is banned for first half dozen games, Vilma is gone for a yr, yadda yadda. ...and there is brees, no doubt the best or tied for best Qb in league, wanting 21 mil instead of his 19 mil. What is that going to do to salary cap when saints need money to sign other quality players? It zaps it is what. N.O. is on life support and their qb who deserves top $$ is not in camp with a decimated , coachless team, wanting that extra 2 mil.
Now there is a way to really screw up your already screwed team. Hey , it's THEIR problem , not ours, but the point about screwing up salary cap management with these ultra high end players just hurts nobody but the team they play for...whether it is Peyton in Denver, VJax , Wallace, Brady , Brees,...doesn't matter. All those guys are just screwing their own teams in the long run...heck in short run also.

You have to admire the way Coach and baalke stuck to their guns and didn't get Wallace, VJax, or similar salary wrecking commodity.

They already have $118M committed for 2013(Saints do), and without Brees extended. He would be in the 18M range for the tag again.

They also some free agents, Devery Henderson, Scott Shanle, Chase Daniel, Jabari Greer, Sedrick Ellis are all UFAs,

Denver is in a better position as of now, $103M for 2013.

I feel it's better to not throw money at big name guys, it only will hurt cap wise.

We have following committed.

2013- $130M (75 players, good amount are UDFA and low deals.)
2014- $93M (47 players)
2015- $48M (13 players)
2016- $24M (3 players)
2017- $15M (2 players)
AB, I didn't used to think that way but I am a convert. Right now i am really glad we aren't on the hook for Peyton's $100 Mil or whatever it is, VJax's ridiculous salary, and altho i really wanted wallace, his $121 Mil pricetag(or thereabouts) would have left me limp. We did fine...great in fact, good crop of guys, two pearls at #1 and 2, and very likely other starters in time...perhaps an OG that may even have a shot this yr. Nah, i am done with the big price tag imports. Nate the great kind of showed me what blowing a wad will do for you on a team bereft of talent (nothing)....and you just have to literally hope and pray for a Baalke/ Harbaugh to fall in your lap. :Plus mgmt came around once jed was in place for a while. I don't envy any of those teams with the hi price imports. I think it ultimately will bite them all in the backside. Just gimme a dose of B& H and I am happy. Lots of money doesn't work either...look at big Jer in dallass. No thanks.
2008.... dear god
yeah, Chico, '08 was spooky bad....but with acquiring Justin, they almost got the equivalent of 3 starters. Well, two anyway. And they got grant. But no matter how you slice and dice the draft, considering a good draft is 3 starters, well, we ate the weenie on that one. We were still in the death throes of end of noln regime, and beginnig of B.M. regime. Baalke had very little to do back then with 2 inadequate HCs making virtually all the decisions. Once baalke got the reins, we started to build the team.
2011 was excellent and 2012 which is on hold for awhile, I believe will be another stellar draft with both AJ and la Michael starting this yr, and our OL picks will be good backups waiting to break into the starting 11.

think of poor dallas, with a fully engaged owner- team president-GM, and probably calls some plays for all i know...but no question, cowboys have gotten torched by one lousy draft after another, never fully protecting their qb, and playing D for 11 yrs with no talent at CB. Their pick that became the 6th pick in the draft will turn into a CB with all pro written all over him in a yr or two. But aside from that, the cowboys do good each yr ...until the draft. Then the super owner takes a header from the high board into the kiddie pool....and he., personally has killed his own team.

I agree 100%, and of course we could of restructured deals, but that only pushes back money, which is never good, see Steelers with Big Ben.

2007 was definitely a great draft year, but as far as acquisitions, I don't think anything comes close to 2011. Great draft and great signings that played a huge part in our run to the NFC Championship.
Thanks AB, for the update, which I was unaware of. Impressive to say the least. The 2014 signings, altho only 4 in number are one helluva lot of talent to say the least. Best punter, all pro ILB, superb DB, and then there is the heart of the team, Justin, as in just in time for the SB. Only 4 guys, but wow, what a lot of talent....that needs to be re-signed. As for restructuring deals which just pushes back money, it is a template of our Congress...just keep kicking the can down the road. It works as well in Congress as it does in football. Neither is very sound.

And i agree, dynasty, 2007 was great, but 2011 was, incredibly... better.
