The list of San Francisco 49ers players who continue to sit out training camp practices is lengthy. That prompted one reporter to ask assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster, who is serving as interim head coach while Kyle Shanahan recovers from injuries sustained in a car accident, whether the team might have to cancel next week's joint practices with the Tennessee Titans because of a lack of available players.
Foerster downplayed the 49ers' injury concerns, pointing out that, aside from a few instances, most of the injuries are short-term issues. While true, excessive injuries have become expected in Santa Clara, underlining a bigger problem.
"It seems like we're very healthy," Foerster said. "I mean, we have injuries. We have dings and bumps and bruises, and guys are missing practices. It's (canceling the joint practice) yet to come up in anything I've heard. Doesn't mean it hasn't been discussed, but shoot, I think we'll [have] plenty [of players]."
Still, the 49ers' mounting injuries continue to be a talking point among NFL media, which is understandable considering how last season unfolded. San Francisco won 12 games and made the playoffs, but did so despite missing several key contributors, including defensive end Nick Bosa, linebacker Fred Warner, and others. Even quarterback Brock Purdy missed significant time.
Of course, there is also continued speculation about the potential effects of the neighboring electrical substation, which is prominently featured in the background of many training camp photos and videos. The 49ers investigated the potential effects of the substation this offseason but concluded there was no evidence that it was impacting the team's players.
Donte Whitner calls out 49ers' injury issues
Former 49ers safety Donte Whitner recently called out the team's ongoing injury issues. He did not blame the electrical substation or promote any other conspiracy theories. Still, he made it clear that he believes there is a legitimate issue behind the team's repeated setbacks.
"You have to stop calling it bad luck," Whitner said on The Grit Code podcast. "[WR Ricky] Pearsall, [TE George] Kittle, [WR Christian] Kirk, [RB] Kaelon Black, [RB Isaac] Guerendo, [S Malik] Mustapha, and several more. Some injuries are random. Football is a violent sport, but when the same problem shows up every year, it becomes a pattern.
"So the real questions here are: Are they drafting and signing too many players with medical concerns? Are rehabilitation and return-of-play decisions being rushed?"

The 49ers clearing the electrical substation of responsibility does not necessarily resolve the broader issue. If anything, Whitner believes it raises more questions about what could be contributing to the team's recurring injury problems.
Is it the athletic training department, which is in charge of player health and performance? Is it the way practices are conducted? Is it the age of the roster? Or is it a combination of all of those factors?
"And yes, the organization says the substation proximity was independently tested, but here's the problem," Whitner continued. "The injuries are still piling up. So maybe the testing cleared the substation concern, but did it not explain the organizational pattern?
"At some point, you have to stop asking whether the substation caused every injury and start asking why this team keeps living the same injury story every single year?"
Injuries impacting the 49ers' identity
Dealing with significant injuries year after year is not the identity that the 49ers seek. And it certainly won't help them reach their ultimate goal of a championship.
"One bad injury season is unfortunate," Whitner said. "Repeated injury seasons become an organizational pattern. And patterns deserve an independent investigation. You can clear the substation concern, but you still have to explain the pattern because you cannot keep calling it bad luck when it becomes a part of the team and the organization's identity."
Until the underlying issue is identified and addressed, the 49ers could continue to carry the reputation of being a talented team with legitimate championship aspirations that repeatedly sees those hopes derailed by injuries.
