I never worry about getting bullied in the zone. The niners knew what they were doing and accepted the risks that were associated with this. Getting a HOF QB trumps any feelings of a mediocre QB. This is big boy business you gotta do whatever it takes to improve your team.

I don't understand what they did wrong? They made Alex an offer to sign before free agency started. He didn't want to sign it. They decided to look at possibly the best FA QB in history because there team had no starting QB. They didn't let Alex force their hand in negotiations and they never publicly said about pursuing manning. Were they suppose to wait until Alex signed elsewhere to look for a replacement?

Well I wanted us to sign Manning and I am neither a Manning fan nor a Colts fan. I however can recognize that he could have done wonders for our offense. I am not a fan of the high profile players that are paid huge to fix teams themselves but can't ignore his talent. I would much rather be the underdog and win when you shouldn't have. Manning would have been the quick fix solution but I believe he could have set this franchise up for long term success.

I dont think he should be attacked either. Nothing wrong with disagreeing with the FO but so far these dudes have done pretty well.
Nobody has been more critical of the Niner organization in the last few years than myself. But I do think we finally have some competent football people running the show.

he is right, alex should have signed , the niners had to go after manning but when alex left for miami , that is when they started to bungle things cuz that caught them by surprise.in the 80's walsh handled things with class and dignity. i like our coach and front office but even they are not perfect and they did not help matters at all, i hope all sides learned something from this and we can move ahead in a positive way. i think alot of people think like maddog and i in that its ok to be critical of the front office but still be fans. i think some are afraid to say it cuz they would get bullied on the zone

Agreed. Especially when you had the best offer Alex was gonna get on the table for him to sign as soon as FA started and he chose not to sign it. Are they supposed to tip toe around him and tell him "Well, since you're not signing our contract, we're going to try to sign a HoF QB that we may be able to acquire. Is that ok with you? We're so sorry you don't want our $24 million, but we hope it's ok we go about our business trying to become a better football team" ?

So we didn't get Manning. No one else in the league really wanted Alex so we had all the leverage. Right now he is still a placeholder until he does enough to prove he's elite and deserves a big payday. While we have the leverage we can get him to sign any contract we want because he not going anywhere else. It's a hard cold truth but even after last season he is still a second tier QB with a set value that this team has set for him.

This is not a true statement at all. This has been their MO since their arrival. They have done this with every single free agent they've had. They offer a contract before they get to free agency. If the player wants it, he takes it (Ahmad Brooks). If he doesn't want it, he tests the waters and the 49ers get moving on to a Plan B. It's happened at all positions on the roster. If Alex was bothered by this, he shouldn't have been surprised (Goldson 2011, Clements 2011, Rogers this year, Ginn this year, Morgan this year, Costanzo this year). They have their core and they will not overspend or coddle. It works for every other marquee franchise.
Purely speculation, but I would not be surprised if it comes out that Alex was made fully aware that they were going to talk to other FA QBs. Even Condon knows that a team is not going to sit around and wait for a slightly above average player. The FO did their jobs, doing everything in their power to try and improve the team.
I for one am glad he's back. This team has been setup to win with him. I hope he proves he can take the next step and go balls out. His overly careful approach to the position is his greatest asset and his biggest setback. I hope next year he takes that next step.

I think it's fair to criticize when its due, but we're operating under the assumption that Alex is upset since that is what has been reported. I still think $8MM/year is high given his known limitations, but his personal performance over the past two seasons (just based on statistics alone) is indicative of an above average quarterback. He'll be fine when it's all said and done, and I am fairly confident team chemistry will not be affected.

This.
The bottom line is people want the 49ers to add talent in free agency and sign their own players and there are tons of threads and posts about how this signing or that effects the salary cap. The 49ers make an offer to Smith that NO TEAM IN THE NFL MATCHED and Smith doesn't sign. So the 49ers should offer him more than his fair market value as a "thank you" for last year? Did Smith give back the guaranteed money he made on his rookie deal that far exceeded his production?
I don't understand how somebody could accuse the FO of not having class because they took a look at other options. When they interviewed Eric Wright, that showed no class to Carlos Rogers? Smith could have ended this by signing before FA started. Thought he was worth more, found out he isn't, and signed. Class has nothing to do with it.
