I think both sides could have handled it better.
Look the 49ers wanted Alex Smith back first and made the offer. Smith didn't take it and tried to use leverage by not signing, so should the 49ers not check out Peyton Manning?
It's not like that didn't do this before? They did the same thing with Kurt Warner a few years ago.
Alex Smith needs to step up his game even more and Colin Kapernick is going to be breathing down his neck.
Now since Alex Smith waited he probably will get some more money than the original offer, but he's the one who subjected himself to being "out" there. Look Alex Smith doesn't have a ton of teams beating down his door.
Hopefully next year, he can take his game up another level. He's going to have fun with Randy Moss and Manningham.
And I hope we pick up two more WR's and Fleener in the draft.
It's just business.

Baalke and Harbaugh proved they are great coach and GM

yep.
I have been hanging out at the Broncos' board and you should see the swarm of new Broncos fans.
They were congratulating the team and said Denver will be their #2 team. The influx of wagoners were horrible.
PM fans wanted him to come here so he can get an easy ring.

the way MadDog talks to other fans, I find it hard to believe he would be able to do the job with "more class" than Trent Baalke.

Isn't he a teacher or something. Just imagine how he treats his students.

Yeah anything is a risk in the NFL. The niners themselves have been described as playing high risk high reward defense am I right? You know where our corners will go for an interception over letting them catch the ball and making a tackle? I personally think it has worked good. Sometimes you lose and sometimes you win that battle. That is a perfect way to describe the Manning situation as well. We got the worse end of it this time but you got to take some chances. I am glad they went for him it proves they want to win no matter the risk.
I think it's great.

he is right, alex should have signed , the niners had to go after manning but when alex left for miami , that is when they started to bungle things cuz that caught them by surprise.in the 80's walsh handled things with class and dignity. i like our coach and front office but even they are not perfect and they did not help matters at all, i hope all sides learned something from this and we can move ahead in a positive way. i think alot of people think like maddog and i in that its ok to be critical of the front office but still be fans. i think some are afraid to say it cuz they would get bullied on the zone

Pointing your finger at others anonymously on the internet claiming they have no class is also a sign of no class.

nobody wanted us to sign Manning. He doesn't deserve to be a 9er.
The only people that wanted us to sign Manning were his fans and Colts fans looking for a second team.
How does a hall of fame caliber quarterback that has handled himself with class on and off the field for his entire 14 year career not "deserve" to be a 49er? That statement makes absolutely no sense. The only people that wanted us to sign Manning were those that actually thought he could improve our QB position. Call us crazy, but Manning is quite possible an upgrade over Smith.

I wouldnt go along the lines of horrible................... how exactly were they supposed to handle it? they were def. smart in keeping it low away from the media for as long as they did.
Agree. When you have a chance to get a 4-time MVP quarterback who can give you an even better shot at championships you take it. They have class and you have to try and make a move like this when the chance arrives. Would have been great if we got him, but we didn't so lets move on and get ready for the season now. Like the moves they have made in free agency and can't wait for the draft too!

I never worry about getting bullied in the zone. The niners knew what they were doing and accepted the risks that were associated with this. Getting a HOF QB trumps any feelings of a mediocre QB. This is big boy business you gotta do whatever it takes to improve your team.

The whiny hand wringing over a supposed lack of class is pretty funny to me. As if any of you really know who said what to who and when. It's a pattern that's common here when posters tailor an unknown back-story to fit their preconceived notions. Maybe it will all come out someday that the 49ers were actively attempting to limit ole Smitty's options, but don't count on it. Until then I doubt any NFL executives or the media will be confusing Baalke with Jeff Ireland.
