In the end, I don't care where the stats really have us ranked. I think we are a middle of the pack offense. We rely heavily on a strong run game, field position and a stingy D. If a team shuts down our run than we are going to have a much more difficult time beating them through the air. We have seen that Alex and company can get it done. Except in the playoffs it may need to be done on a weekly basis.
The team has been playing with a chip on their shoulder all season. Come playoff time, these headlines will be good to fuel their fire. 29th ranked offense... Suspect secondary... Alex is a game manager... Can't hang with the Saints and Packers... Not ready for primetime... Blah, blah, blah

Marvin's analysis of the year by sections is worthwhile.
We relied on a strong run game the first three games and banged our heads against a wall. Then they started being more balanced and running picked up. The special teams won the field position battle and the D kept kicking the opponents offense off the field.
The 9ers offense has had many setbacks in the form of injuries and inconsistent play by WRs and the OLine but they have improved throughout the year. It is not an accident that their two lowest 3rd down percentage games were against two good or great defenses. Though Detroit's D is mid level re-points scored it is 10th in yards against. It was obvous that the offense was going to take longer to get going...and it has.
Analyzing the game comparing with and without the first three games can serve a useful purpose if you are interested in analyzing this improvement. If you are just looking for ways to make the offense look bad it's not difficult to do...they haven't stepped it up to an elite, or even a good, NFL level. Will they? I believe so and think their lack of success so far was predictable. Whether they will jell for the playoffs or next year--who knows?

We would be -10 in turnover ratio and have a 5-6 record.
Imagine if we had a healthy WR corp that could catch, burn people, and break tackles.

Yes, but its because they have gotten themselves into a position to try things they weren't trying before. They are passing more than they are running to prepare themselves for a playoff run.
Thats not to say that they will Pass more than run in the playoffs. I'm just saying they are preparing themselves for a January run.
Fine with me to get ready for the playoffs by doing this. Hope it helps the team out

I think also having Edwards in the lineup has hurt---unless he is healthy he doesn't help. I pray Swain can become our Jordy Nelson!

from my thread that was merged a week back..
2/12 16% on 3rd down conversions against the Ravens
8/21 38% on 3rd down conversions against the Cards
3/11 27% against the Giants
3/12 25% against the Redskins
6/15 40% against the Browns
2/14 14% against the Lions
etc...
the point is we have been bad at converting 3rd down conversions all year. It just helped us that most of the teams we played made mistakes to get us good field position or just get the ball back for our offense to get another chance to score something. Sure we caused those mistakes as well, but we have also had the luxury of offenses making bonehead plays to help us out.
we need to see a dramatic improvement against the Rams.
...and these statistics coincide perfectly with the loss of Joshua Morgan... Up until he got hurt, he was a nice 3rd down option for Alex. With Edwards also hurt and unable to make much of an impact, Alex has a lot more limitations on his options on 3rd down, particularly third and long situations. Just saying...

Hmm...9ers were better on 3rd downs with Singletary. OMG...they made a terrible mistake by replacing him with Harbaugh!
As a matter of fact, the 9ers were really good on 3rd down with Dennis Erickson--10th in the NFL! Where is he? Let's bring him back! Stats are fun!

what the hell is wrong with some of you? Every time there are facts provided in front of you about an issue regarding the team, some on here get defensive for GOD KNOWS WHAT REASON and fly off to koo koo land and post nonsense from there.
who the F'said the 9ers made a terrible mistake to replace Singletary with Harbaugh?
