I only saw him play in that one game san diego vs us, so I wonder how much talent he really has.

All I know is the 2011 season was the FIRST season in 10 years where I liked the qb depth chart and had confidence in #1, #2 and #3. I think Alex Smith will re sign a 2-3 year deal. This will give Kaepernick and Tolzien time to master the offense and be able to fill in if Smith goes down. I think unless Tolzien is lights out in pre season, Kaepernick would be the #2. It is an open competition, but be honest Alex is the de facto starter if he is re signed.
