Season 1: Was in a holdout.
Season 2: Injured Neck.
Season 3: Injured Foot.

None of those things have anything to do with a lack of effort.

In fact, he GOT hurt this year participating in a NON-mandatory practice with his teammates during a Lockout. Had he gotten SERIOUSLY injured, the Niners could have RELEASED him without an injury waiver. He was takig a risk to participate and be with his teammates.

I realize that the truth isn't as fun as the perception, but the hate on Crabtree drives me nuts.

1. He chose to hold out
2. Magically he was better once the season started
3. magical injury once training camp was due to start.

1) Yes. He held out. Get over it.
2) Magical neck injury. Um OK.
3) He got hurt PRACTICING during the lockout. Please pay attention.

This is Year 3 for Crabtree.

We should have the best offense we've had in years, and the one most suited for our players.

We have another #1-type receiver with experience and a lot to prove.

Crabtree has a lot to prove.

...I think Crabtree is going to have the kind of year that makes the "hate" evaporate pretty quickly.

One would hope because all his rookie year did was create disappointment due to elevated expectations that were not met.

other than the holdout, which was very disappointing, I thought his rookie year was very good.

Isaac Bruce used to do interviews with his back turned, if he gave them at all. He didn't catch the negative labels because he produced on the field.

The whole "sweatsuit ninja" outfit that he wears when the media is in the locker room isn't bad in and of itself. However, when you add it to the lack of production on the field, the questions about his work ethic, and his constant pre-season injuries, then there's not a lot that's good to talk about.

Lack of production? His numbers went up from his rookie season despite the chaos at QB for last year. If Crabtree had a QB the quality of T.Green,Warner or even Bulger his numbers would be better. The question on his work ethic are stupid rumors that cant be proved. Theres plenty to thats good to talk about Crabtree too. He tore up Philly, his critical TD over Oakland, the games vs the Rams. How he showed up in 09 and looked great should also show he has a work ethic. There are lots of good things to talk about if you want to. Most dont want to after he doubted Smith being the starter. Until then there wasnt much hate on Crabtree. Shocking huh

1. I apologize for not making this clear. I've got no hate for Crabtree. I think he's extraordinarily talented, and can be an asset to this team.
2. Take another look at those improved numbers in his second year. While he did catch 7 more passes in year 2, he also played in 5 more games. That actually averages out to one less reception per game. His touchdowns went up, but his numbers last year are those of a really good number 2. This is a guy that averaged around 110 receptions a season in college, and was taken 10th in the draft. People expect number 1 numbers because of that.
3. There's no doubt that better QB play would help him. However, the really great receivers overcome things like that. It might be unfair to point out the numbers Larry Fitzgerald put up last year(90, 1137) with the dumpster fire that was the Cardinals QB situation, as he is an elite receiver. But what about a guy like Santana Moss of the Redskins, who caught 93 passes for 1115 with Grossman and a rundown McNabb throwing to him? Both of those teams could be argued to have had worse QB situations last year(they both had worse team passer ratings), and yet their top receivers still managed to put up top receiver numbers.
4. Yes, there have been flashes of the player he can be, but there are also flashes of the player that people are afraid he is. The lack of effort that he showed on that interception early in the year doesn't help a player who has a reputation for not giving everything, every play. This is especially true when it's reported that he was in a fist fight with a team leader who was displeased with his lack of effort. Are they rumors that can't be proved? To a degree. But there's a lot of them, and people by and large tend to think: where there's smoke, there's fire.

I want this kid to succeed. The level of talent that would be on the field with Crabtree, Edwards, and Davis should be enough to make any DC in the league sweat. But the truth is that he has not produced up to the level of hype that came with his prolific college career, and until he starts putting up better numbers, many in the public are going to continue to question his work ethic and desire. It may be unfair, but that's how it goes.

That is what I was referring to, I was expecting big things from him last year but it was a major bust of a year.

oh, i get ya now; sorry, misread your post.

Yes, he regressed some last year in terms of per-game production. But its impossible for me to hold it against him. I understand why others do, but I just can't. I'm actually pretty ambivalent about Crabtree. I don't get worked up about him one way or the other, but I do think that he'll have a better year this year. I think he'll flourish as a #2 in a WCO, which will erase a lot of the questions and doubts about him.

I hope so, I do see him making more progress and flourishing in the WCO. He is the type of receiver that can make something happen after the catch. I would just like for him to stay "healthy" so he can build some chemistry with the QB before midseason for once.

I think having Edwards here will really motivate him. Not that I think Crabtree lacks motivation, I just think maybe he needs someone to show him how to be a #1 WR in the NFL. From all reports, Edwards has been very professional, a very involved teammate, and we're seeing some of that pay off on the field. Crabtree has so much talent and is still so f**king young and has had such a primitive offense to work with, with no one modeling what it takes to be a great WR (and a coach who couldn't appreciate the value of the position in the modern NFL) that I think he has been somewhat "lost at sea" here.

and now Edwards will command enough respect that Crabtree will find himself with more opportunities to use his RAC ability...IDK, for me the "problems' he has are all so fixable and things seem to moving into place in such a way that I think they'll get fixed soon, and, like I said, I think we'll see a season from him that will put some of this stuff to rest. Just my opinion, hope its right!

3) He got hurt PRACTICING during the lockout. Please pay attention.

1. ottally his fault he wanted top 5 money in #10 spot because he was rated higher in mock drafts

2. neck injury was minor doctors cleared him and evem sing said "if this was teh regular season he would play"

3. this is only legit injury

but 3 years of not practicing with the team and expecting to be great is unacceptable

"If this was the regular season he would play" usually means "He's technically healthy enough to play but since these games don't mean s**t we're going to let him heal more and not risk another injury because these meaningless games are meaningless."

1. People need to get over the contract dispute. It's over and done with, just let it go.

2. But it wasn't the regular season.. It was the pre-season, and there was no reason to risk further injury to the team's #1 receiver. Really easy to have that neck hurt pretty bad again by taking a shot in the the back on a curl route or getting lit up across the middle.

3. Bad luck.
I do like crabs but he will be the third best option when Alex drops back to pass. Vernon and Braylon are more explosive and will probably have more separation between themselves and their defenders than crabs will. Whoever ends up starting in the slot might have better numbers than crabs this year.

2) Um....that doesn't mean it was his decision not to play. All sing was saying was that if it were regular season he'd play. Its not worth the risk in the pre-season. That was a COACHES call.
He held out after being drafted, he has yet to play a preseason game in 3 years, he hasn't been great on the field, he drops passes or he doesn't go for everything, he isn't a good media interview, he isn't fan friendly, he isn't Jerry Rice, he isn't even TO. We don't hate him--we just don't love him!
Comr on crabs get hralthy soon get back on the field and lets kickass this season hell yeah go niners!
