Also, Smith only has started 5 more games than Cassel and 4 more games than Ryan. You do realize he's only started more than 10 games in a season once right? Cassel has started 15 games each of the last 2 years and Ryan has started 16, 14, and 16 games. Those guys have also played with better weapons around them and far more coaching continuity. Saying he's been a full time starter for 5 years is a joke. The only year there wasn't complete instability at QB was 2006. That's it. ONE year.

Bradford may wind up being better, but as of now he's not. Smith put up better #'s than him last year. Same with a guy like Stafford, he hasn't proven s**t. You point out Whitehurst as if he is good??? And Alex Smith is WAAAAAY better than Tarvaris Jackson. Smith also put up way better #'s (rating, TD/INT ratio, yds/attempt, etc.) than Kolb last year with way worse offensive coaching and a way inferior supporting cast. Kolb went 2-3 in his 5 games and that's with 4 of the 5 games being against teams picking in the top-10. He only had 1 good game (against Atlanta). The other 4 he either sucked BADLY or played mediocre at best. So explain to me the logic of how Kolb is better. Please. Also, this is not 2004. McNabb is not better than Smith. He is one of the 3-5 worst starting quarterbacks in football right now most likely. Smith is also better than Grossman (is that a joke?), Campbell, and Garrard. As for Matt "34 TD's vs. 44 INT's over the last 3 years with QB ratings of 57.8, 75.1, and 73.2" Hasselbeck, again, look at his #'s since 2008. Absolutely DISGUSTING. The last 2 years Alex Smith has played some very solid football (32 TD's vs. 22 INT's, many of which bounced off receivers' hands) despite the worst offensive coaching in football and an absolute revolving door of OC's. Imagine if he were in, say, Kolb's situation of having Reid/Mornhinweg coaching him without learning a new system every year and throwing to guys like Jackson/Maclin/Celek. The guy absolutely deserves the benefit of the doubt.

The one team I said that's debatable is the Broncos because Orton's pretty solid. But LMAO at listing Tebow/Quinn as if they are even anything better than Kaepernick/McCown. I'll take Kaepernick over either of them in a HEARTBEAT and it's not even close.

By the way, I also should have added the Jets as they win despite Sanchez, not because of him (and were UNBELIEVABLY lucky to sneak into the '09 playoffs in the first place)...the dude has finished 27th and 28th in the league in QB rating the last 2 years

I don't get what you're arguing. The dude said there are 10 teams with worse QB situations than us and you go on to state how those QB situations are worse than us. You pretty much agreed with him. You are both defending Smith, but you seem to be attacking that poster. What's your deal?

Only 13 QBs that were clearly better than ALex? That might be the stupidest thing I have ever heard on WZ. EVER. There might be 3 teams in the entire NFL that would trade their QB for ALex. Maybe 3.

Maybe ALex turns his career around and has a good year. Maybe, maybe not. But to this point he hasnt done a goddamn thing in the NFL. Certainly hasnt done anything to warrant him being considered the 14th best QB in the whole league. Maybe he will develop under Harbaugh, maybe not. But to this point, he is at the bottom of the barrel.

Again, the #'s don't lie. I dare you to name, say, 5 QB's that have CLEARLY played better over the last year or 2 that I didn't list. Ready, GO!

When most of this board thinks of Alex Smith, they tend to not think of anything other than '05 when he was playing as a 21 year old rookie with Anthony Clement "protecting" his blindside and throwing to the likes of Johnnie Morton's corpse, Jason McAddley, Arnaz Battle, etc....or the middle of '07 when he was playing with a shredded shoulder. The bottom line is, despite getting dealt a worse hand in terms of coaching situation throughout his career than anyone else BY FAR, he has played solid football in '06, beginning part of '07 with his shoulder actually in tact (even with JIM HOSTLER coaching him), '09, and '10 ('08 he missed the whole season with that shoulder that Nolan made him play with in the middle of '07). There's no way there's more than AT THE MOST 15-16 or so QB's I'd take before him.

I was arguing 2 things. One of which was him saying we have the very worst set of back-up QB's in the league and the other was him saying that Smith is not better than guys like Hasselbeck, Tarvaris Jackson, Charlie Whitehurst, Rex Grossman, etc. How did we pretty much agree??

Smith is by no means bottom of the barrel, you answer his bias with bias of your own, don't be a hypocrite.

Where is my bias? He isnt at the bottom of the barrel? Every QB rating and ranking list you see has him at 25 and below. If I am being biased, why dont you correct me and tell me what teams would love to have Smith starting over the QB that they currently have? Im curious to see what you think. Because I can list Buffalo, Cincinnati, Washington and thats where I get stuck.

Like I said earlier, maybe Harbaugh can develop ALex and turn him into a good QB....maybe not. But he hasnt proven anything.

You don't trade up in the second round for a QB if he's going to be a 2-3 year project, especially if you don't have a franchise guy already. And Thompson was brought in to be the project, Masoli is more of camp fodder. He was going to be a RB even. Josh is way better to be the third than Culpepper. Culpepper is not a team guy.

Your right you don't, but there's no way as of right now that Kaepernick is even close to starting an NFL game. Thompson a project, I think the tables have turned cause Masoli is #3 and Thompson is #4, and Masoli WILL NOT be playing RB and will stay at QB. And what evidence do you have for Culpepper not being a team guy??

I agree. Alex is middle of the road as of last season. Which in my mind means we don't have the worst situation...but we do need to get better.

Uh, no, he hasn't been 25 or below, even though most QB's would have been if they had to deal with what he's had to coaching wise. In fact, in '09, he had a higher rating than Matt Ryan, Matt Cassel, and Jay Cutler.

Again, it's a dare to anyone to name 5 QB's that were CLEARLY better than Smith over the past year or two other than the following 13 guys: both Mannings, Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Flacco, Roethlisberger, Schaub, Cassel (even though he had a lower '09 rating), Rivers, Vick, Ryan (even though he had a lower '09 rating), and Freeman...any takers??
Bucky Brooks - NFL.com

Alex Smith is still maddeningly inconsistent. The presumed starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers shows flashes of brilliance as a passer, but those moments are often undone by inexplicable turnovers that leave you scratching your head.

Smith led the offense on two long drives against the Raiders by efficiently getting the ball to his playmakers on quick-rhythm throws. His accuracy was superb. In fact, he delivered a 32-yard bullet to Josh Morgan that showcased his courage, toughness and anticipation in the pocket.

On the other hand, Smith tossed a bonehead interception to Matt Shaughnessy on a misread of a zone blitz. Granted, the pre-snap disguise of zone pressures can fool even savvy signal callers, but the failure to diagnose the basic zone blitz used by the Raiders is surprising for a seven-year veteran with a ton of experience. Jim Harbaugh was willing to gamble on his ability to rebuild Smith into a capable playmaker, but early indications suggest his quarterback remains an enigma.

lol. that's almost as bad as the articles on SI and other national media outlets saying that Culpepper was going to be our starting QB.
CK is pretty accurate and looks like a qb.

With Alex, you know you're going to get at least 1 to 2 INT's a game.

Nevermind CK threw two picks last week.
