No! I think he wanted Ponder, but was blind sided by the Vikes.
I don't think so. It seemed pretty clear they wanted Kaepernick judging from Harbaughs description of being excited to get him and being impressed with Baalke making it happen when there were 3 or 4 teams trying to get him at the next spot.

Regardless, I prefer Kaepernick to Dalton, so even if they secretly coveted Dalton, I'm glad we didn't get'im.

Dilfer said that Harbaugh really wanted Kaepernick. I believe it since is Dilfer has become somewhat of a 9er insider.
People just need s**t to complain about...
With all due respect, this topic is missing a larger point. One thing we do know and is much more relevant from a fan perspective, is that this pick will forever tie two Bay Area rival organizations together.

NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reported that the Raiders (with picks 48 and 81) also were in talks with the Patriots, setting up a Bay Area battle for the QB.

It was reported that the Turlock, CA kid was a big time Raider/Al Davis guy prior to the draft, confirmed by his attempt to trade with a historically friendly trading partner in New England. And we know that Balke had to land his prized QB guru head coach his coveted QB - the GM's number 1 mandate. We were not sure who this individual was however.

** Side note: Refer to this insightful article: http://www.49erswebzone.com/commentary/915-get-harbaughs-quarterback-baalke-must-whatever-takes/. As this article implies, I believe that Balke did indeed make sure he got the right guy and that it was Kap. Why would a GM who is clearly tepid about Alex Smith as the long term solution, not pull the trigger on a trade for A. Dalton when they had a whole evening and day to work on getting a trade to move before Cincy in a draft in which he has more picks than any other team, if that was his guy's guy? **

This was one of the more fascinating draft day battles unfolding before our eyes between cross town rivals who rarely face each other in any sort of hand to hand combat. (Remember, Davis is already pissed that WE go his guy. He waited to hire Jackson precisely because he was hoping to land Harbaugh who initially came into the NFL coaching ranks through the Raiders as Al loves to point out.)

It appeared that the Pats were seconds away from trading the pick to Al for Kap. And we literally saw the deal unravel before our eyes. It appeared that coach Bill saved us by upping the ante last second as you saw the NFL trade guy hand up the phone with time expiring. We were able to pick up Kap a few picks later.

What happens with Dalton is irrelevant at this point. Our guy, coached by a proven winner who made a NFL player out of Josh Johnson coming from that football powerhouse USD, WILL be acknowledged as at least the 2nd best quarterback of the 2011 draft when this draft is properly evaluated in future years.

It is my conviction that JH wants this guy all along (K)
Baalke made the trade after Dalton was selected as K was the last good QB available (2nd round potential) and he didn't want to miss on him.
They expected the bengals to go Dalton but yes they gambled cos they weren't sure

u guys f**king serious?? c'mon now. there is only one.

I think this should end all debate. Watch the video where Kaepernick's parents describe what happened. Niners were going to pick him at #33 but the trade with the patriots fell through. He was our guy all along.

we gave up quite a bit to get that slot we took Kaepernick in. if we wanted Dalton, im sure it wouldnt have taken much more to move up to the Pats 33rd pick and take Dalton if we really wanted.

I think Harbaugh made a great choice, and had him in mind the entire time. Kap has the size, the speed, the brains, the arm, and hes a good guy. hes the real deal. you cant really ask for much more in a QB prospect. his only flaws are very fixable with the right coaching, which is exactly what we just hired to run the team.

If Harbaugh can harness this kids potential, he could be the steal of the draft.
why do u call harbaugh jb?
