With the drafting of Aldon Smith, do we re-sign Lawson?

Not too shabby

Compared to what? I would take half a dozen other starting 3-4 LB's units over that squad.

I'm going by the assumption that we took Aldon 7th overall because he can be a dominant passrusher. If we have a LB unit with Willis, a 10+ sack guy, then throw in Spikes and Lawson. That is pretty good.

Lol like who?

Running situations a Lawson/Willis/Spikes/Aldon combo is all you could ask for, assuming decent rookie success for Aldon, that's a top 3 LB core against the run.

Passing situations... Brookes or Laboy/Willis/Bowman or Spikes/Aldon, unproven but allot to get excited about. The thing to watch for with Aldon is his lateral quickness. Where Manny just kept trying to run around the tackle, Aldon has the quickness to sink back inside and get a straight shot to the QB.
Im guessing Lawson is a goner...
I thought we signed Lawson to a 1-year tender before the lock-out started (as a pre-cautionary)???

First off there is a disease around here where fans like to believe in April that the player the team just drafted will somehow magically not be a rookie in Sept.

If, and it is a pretty big If.....If Smith can develop, its years away so Smith and Spikes will never be good at the same time together.

in 2011 there will be far superior LB crews working.

In the future..... ?, Willis, Bowman, Smith could be something to notice but for next season I don't see it

It is a good LB unit. Which is what I said. Agree to disagree.
fans' biased against Lawson come from the fact the didn't turn out to be the stud OLB you'd put on the right side to rush the QB and rack up sacks. However he does a good job on the left side in coverage and is a decent pass rusher, if you can retain him without overpaying for him then you should want to

Exactly... He isn't what he was billed to be, but the player he has turned into is still better than most non-rushing OLB's in the league. He isn't a Ware, or Mathews, but as the other OLB he is in the top third in the league.

Excellent point.

Most of the negative reaction is a result of the fact that the 49ers scouted him poorly. They failed to take into consideration the fact that opponents were far more concerned about blocking Mario Williams than Manny Lawson. As a result, Lawson got some easy sacks where he could use his speed without having to power through guys. In addition, Lawson showed his speed and athleticism in other areas. 49ers scouts just didn't understand what they saw on the field so they sold the fans on this great pass rushing potential.

So now we have the same Lawson he was in college plus some solid pro experience. He is very good in coverage and against the run but is not a big-time pass rusher. He is well worth keeping and if Aldon Smith develops into a true force, Manny may get back to the same role he had opposite Williams.
No we keep Manny. Lawson-Willis-Spikes- Smith

Not shabby.Aldon will hit some bumps but he will turn out fine!
we either let go of Aubrayo or manny.

You all know I love me some Lawson!
Abrayo is a great player as well, hell, he has a pick six lol

Dammit. If only we could keep em for cheap.

No one likes Brooks?

Smith/Laboy (if we get him back), Willis, Spikes/Bowman and Lawson/Brooks seems like a good LB core to me.

We get Stephan Paea and I won't feel butt hurt if we lose Aubrayo.

What worries me about Brooks is that it's been a long time since he's had to report in... it sucks to say but I think he probably reports in at 280-ish and out of shape, not the way to impress a new coaching staff.

I dunno..Brooks attitude has actually benefited from MS...I bet he shows up ready to play.
