Why do some people here think that it's okay to pay an unproven NFL coach, the same amount of money that you would pay a Gruden, or a Cowher, or a Billick?
Everybody is acting like him and Luck, are the next Montana and Walsh. Luck had one good year in college, 32 TD 6 INTs should not be considered spectacular, let him put up the same numbers again next year and than we can start comparing his college career. And Harbaugh? WTF has he done??? "Oh, well his brother is a good NFL coach, so automatically he's going to be a good NFL coach." Really...how many National Championships has he won, or gone to? What did he do prior to that, 4-8, 5-7, 8-5 W-L record, and people are sold on him because he has "fire" and great pedigree?...that's fine let Miami keep him and overpay for him, because it's going to take him the retirement of Belicheck and Brady for him to win the division, and oh ya, the Jets play in that division too.
Because the alternatives are bleak to say the least. There is not one assistant or unemployed coach that I had more faith in than Harbaugh, based on personality, fit to personnel, and proven ability to rebuild a team from ashes to prominence (albeit in the NCAA).
I wouldn't say that he made Stanford a place of prominence again. He had one good year, this year, the same year that Luck had a good year; prior to that, he did not do that great, if we compare Stanford to other dominant universities, and should we not compare the two? What is so spectacular about him that other college coaches have not done? Current teams that come to mind are, Uconn, Texas Tech, Cincinati, TCU...and that's just recent. All these schools have been "rebuilt". If you ask most analysts they will tell you that some of his hype is because his brother is also a successful NFL HC, but that doesn't always translate to success.
I would much rather have Gruden, or Billick, or John Fox as a HC, at least these guys are actually proven, have won or been to Superbowls, and know what it takes to get there. Also, they know the players in the league way better than Harbaugh or his staff from Stanford does. Ya, I know you have a scout team and all that, but don't you think most NFL coaches know the tendencies of a lot of NFL players?
I don't feel that bad. This team is ready to win now, we have players in their prime, or entering their prime, and some close to exiting their prime. We all know very well that nothing is certain in football. Just like he can become a solid HC, he can become another college coach, turned pro, bust, it won't be the first time it happened or the last time. At least with even a guy like Fisher or Fox, you know your team will be very competitive and good, if not great.
I have heard exactly that phrase, said it myself, for the last 4 seasons. It starts at the top and Jed York is sooooo obliviously transparent and in over his head that it is making a laughing stock of our team nationally.
"Starting tomorrow there will be an extensive GM search"
Bulls**t, it was Baalke from day 1.
"We will be looking at people from successful teams as well as some people currently not employed in the NFL"
Bulls**t, they did not interview one guy currently working for one of the leagues successful franchises.
"Money is no object"
Bulls**t, they low balled Harbaugh at 4.5m and should have hit the table with no less than 6. Pete signed his contract last year at 7, it reasonable to believe that the hot college coaching candidate was going to cost you. Don't get involved if your not ready to step up and make the play. Had the Niners come correct and closed the effin deal two hours before Miami thought to get involved this wouldn't be an issue, but Prince York tried to take the cheap route like always.
