Jed did not have to do any if this process, he could have given the position to Baalke since McC left. Do you really think he has to make it seemed like a process is taking place for the fans or the media?? Please.
I think he realized whether it be Baalke or whoever he needs someone to make the football decisions he has messed up so badly, like hiring Sing and not firing him after the 0-5 start.

1. Of course Jed is busy with interviews, if he wants to avoid fines from Rooney Rule violations he'd better be.
2. Jed may or may not be smart, but he IS a spoiled rich kid who woke up Christmas morning and found an NFL team under the tree. As far as the fanbase being smart, well 10 minutes in ninertalk would disabuse him of that notion. I'm sure Jed wants to win as much as anyone, but I'm not at all confident in his ability to recruit guys 20-30 years his senior to come be his employees. How would you like to be a 50 odd year old man with 25 years of NFL experience and have a 29 year old spoiled brat be your boss?
3. Of course they want this to work. OF course they want good PR.
4. Eddie D is family. Do you really think he would air his true feelings if they were publicly damaging to Jed?
They didn't need to interview anyone when they promoted McCloughan to GM. Why would this situation be any different? And I never said Jed was smart or that the fanbase was smart. What I meant was that it doesn't take a whole lot of intelligence to know when you're being f**ked with and I'm positive Jed is at least smart enough to understand this. And while I don't think Eddie would share publicly damaging opinions, Eddie D didn't even have to say anything at all of he didn't want to. He doesn't have an ownership stake in this team anymore.

If it looks like a sham, and smells like a sham, it probably is a sham.
When people come out of interviews stating that they have no chance, I tend to believe the sham theory.

Lombardi already said it wasn't an interview. He said something along the lines of 'people need to know that talking on the phone is not always an interview'

Already reported by Maiocco.
Apparently, Al just told him to make sure your new GM runs a sub 4.5.

Lombardi said "I'm not a candidate there" which is a lot more vague than saying that he has no chance. Doesn't necessarily mean that he was even actually considered for the position by the 49ers. It could very well have simply been for advice for all we know.
