Singletary considered yanking Alex Smith

Following a demoralizing 34-7 loss to the Chargers, 49ers coach Mike Singletary said he considered inserting quarterback Troy Smith for Alex Smith, who fell back to earth following an exceptional game against Seattle on Sunday. And he left open the possibility of going with Troy Smith in next Sunday's game in St. Louis.

I thought Alex gave the team the best chance to win or was that only against Seattle? Singletary isn't set on who will start next week either....

Can we put Sing in at QB? I would love to see him get pummeled a few times. Or put him in at RB and call 10 straight runs up the middle!

You know what...I was for benching Smith all season but we're still in the thick of it...why go back to Troy? If Alex can beat the Seahawks...I'm pretty sure he can beat the Rams and Cardinals. If Smith stagnates against the Rams next week...then fine pull his candy a$$. But we could have had Troy, or Nate, or whomever in there tonight and the result would have been the same. Everyone is neglecting how bad our secondary was. Alex was blah no doubt...but he wasn't getting torched by Rivers, fvcking Randy McMichael or whatever his name is, and that guy Rivers.

I agree that Alex should be on a very thin thread though. He gets ONE quarter against the Rams.

We sucked real bad. I can't believe I paid big money to watch this crap... I had good tickets and shouldn't have even gone.

~ We can't move the ball on offense.
~ We can't stop anybody on defense.
~ We get penalties on special teams which brings back huge plays.
~ We have players who don't use their head and get ejected.
~ We are the least prepared and least disciplined team in the league.

Wow you can really see it in person. I can kind of tell on TV. But in person gives you a different story. And we just flat out SUCK! Nowhere more so than coaching. Our preparation, poise and using our head is the worst in the league. The look like they don't practice or use their head at all. This team is worse than 5 - 9. I can't believe they won 5 times. I mean we are just horrible.

What I saw from my endzone seat was Crabtree running wide open on deep routes all game and the ball never came his way. Unbelievably wide open.

This is what I've been saying (about Smith) after every game I've been to. Nothing's changed.

I'm still fuming about the Justin Smith ejection. I get it...rules are rules. But that call was borderline at best, yet listen to how the head ref described it after the game:

Said Blakeman, "Smith basically came at him, shoved him."

That really makes me mad. Justin Smith is a classy guy, and that ref can't hold his jock. He needs to get a new job.

Man......this game was a true disaster....and there have been several this year. Hopefully, the York family watched every painful moment of that pathetic display. There were some real unlucky moments (J Smith getting thrown out by an official who was pushing HIM!) but let us just count the ways that this team utterly failed...

1) The OL played perhaps its worst game of the year...at a time that it should be jelling....or at least showing signs of improvement. The missed block in the middle of the line on the 4th down play at the goal line was simply inexcusable. Someone should lose his job because of that.

2) The ridiculous amounts of room that the CBs were giving to the Charger receivers....dont' know if that is on the "coaches" but it was an absolute disgrace.

3) For the 14th time this season, the coaching staff was completely outcoached, unprepared, and made no adjustments to what the other team was doing.

4) Game plan? If one was ever discussed prior to the game, it was never implemented. This has to be the most predictable team in recent memory....on offense and defense. The other team knows what the Niners are going to do.

5) Absurdly stupid mistakes. Dropped passes (easy ones!), amateurish penalties (I would have cut Moran Norris right on the spot for that penalty on the kickoff), poor tackling, you name it and they did it.

6) Poor QB play....but since the OL was so porous, I can't really put this debacle on A Smith. It was a team "effort".

7) Speaking of effort, this team just lay down like dogs....no passion, no fire, no emotion, pride, no heart......just an absolutely listless "performance". Only Andy Lee, Josh Morgan and Takeo Spikes earned their paychecks tonight. I put a lot of that on the coaching staff however. This team was just totally unprepared to play.

Memo to Yorks......

This joke of a team is seriously tarnishing the legacy of this great franchise and that is YOUR responsibility. DEAL WITH IT!!! Spend the goddam money to bring in a professional front office or SELL THE GODDAM TEAM!!! Thank you and have a nice holiday season.

These Refs are a freakin joke. Whats up with all the hits on Alex Smith. He was grabbed and thrown so many times, but if that were Peyton, Brees, or Brady..15 yard penalty for roughing the passer!!

Stupid GOODELL!!

I really hope we do not go the playoffs..or else we ll be embarrassed so bad.

I have endzone seats at the Stick & I see this same thing. Back in 06 I saw it with Antonio Bryant.

My observations

1. This team kills itself (2nd and 15, Justin Smith hits a ref, gives them a first down they score) (Ahmad brooks missed interception they go down and score) (Ginn runs it back for a TD, flag on the play)
2. i shouldnt have paid 90 bucks for that POS

also did you guys notice when the offense was on the sideline it seems like they were never together?i always so smith by himself,dudes no leader.ive been a simpletary/smith supporter since the beginning, but this embarrassing loss was the last straw. cant wait to clean house and get a real head coach..like they always say there is always next year and i cant wait. lets just finish on a positive note 7-9 (5-1 division) and get a QB and coach next year

I think you hit on some key points---this Niner team doesn't really seem to like each other all that much--these players are not close knit. What you said about Smith sitting alone on the sideline---I think is kinda like what Singletary meant a few weeks back about a lack of leadership on offense. A team is not just players--it has to be a real team--that fights for each other, likes each other, gets mad at each other---just like a real family.
