Niner fans? Or, Niner followers?

Listening to some on this board, you would think our team is 7-4, in first place by two games, and under one of the better head coaches in the NFL.

Believe it or not, we will see these same people chant that the season is not over even after we get blown out by the Packers and go to 4-8. They'll say, "but we are only two games back with four to go. Don't give up on this season. Be a real 'fan'."

This has been a humiliating season, and to have optimism at this point is bordering on insanity.

This "follower" typing says that the "fans" level of expectation is far too low. I don't want to proudly waive a divisional banner at 7-9 or 6-10. How ridiculous and embarrassing!

It is pretty funny for someone with more than eleven thousands posts to be classified as a "follower", and not a "fan", by a person with 41 posts.

As a "fan" of the 49ers, I want this team to succeed in the worst way. Why other "fans" are willing to settle for the mediocrity that is the current 49ers team and organization is beyond me.

I am waiting for the eventual collapse this weekend against a quality team on the road. Then the 49ers will be that much closer to next step in the rebuilding process that has to happen.

(Etymologists disagree on the actual origin, as some say it comes from "fancy"... that's just lame... I'd rather be a fanatic.)

Just remember that everyone if free to be zealous in their own irrational ways. Just because you have a difference of opinion on the direction that the team should take does not mean you are any less fanatical. I can see the rational (that was irony) in planning for the future. Same goes for wanting to win now without a care for what happens later. It's all still fanaticism.

That means we're all still fans.

I will always cheer for my team. I can never root for the 49ers to lose. I will always watch every game. But I do not believe in blind allegience. A "follower," in my lexicon, is one who always follows... even when leadership is wrong. Those who never question authority will be lead over a cliff sooner or later. They are the enablers of disaster.

I was here in the 80's. I know what greatness looks like. I know what a well run NFL franchise looks like. And I'm here to tell ya, this ain't it.

So I go to the games, and I sit in front of the TV, and I cheer like hell. But I'm not going to stop criticising this organisation until they show me they know what they're doing.

I would not consider winning the division at 7-9 to be an achievement. Rather, I would see it as a mark of shame. The fact that so many "fans" aspire to this embarassing distinction only reminds me of just how far we've fallen.

I still have optimism. I believe that Jed York "gets it." I believe he wants to win as badly as I do. I'm hopeful that he will learn from his mistakes. I'm excited for the possibilities of this off-season ...and I'm excited for this Sunday. Go Niners!

I think people who are "cheering" for the Niners to lose aren't rooting for the other team, nor are they rooting against our players. It's more a rebellion against Singletary and this awful coaching staff. The past 3-4 weeks I've found it very difficult to get excited at our success out of fear that Singletary may stay. I want our team to win Super Bowls, not division titles with a 7-9 record! That would associate our team with shame for the rest of our lives, not cool.

What you are seeing lately is people that have just had enough of losing. We're tired of saying give Alex another shot. Or saying other teams are getting lucky. You can only take so much BS and still stay positive. I'd personally rather lose now, not make the playoffs and get embarrassed when everybody is watching us and be stuck with a pick in the 20's. I'm just barely getting over being embarrassed. You don't know how much of Sing's BS I got caught up in. To have this cake of a schedule and have this record is unexcusable and theres only one way I see out of this mess.
