Which Smith should start Week 10?

Now everybody loves Singletary again. You are all too concentrated on the final score.

The game was awful, the play calling was horrendous, TS did a nice job of not messing up but he did not blow me away with this performance.

I think people are just excited about getting a win, and seeing a QB who can actually make plays. Anyone who thinks TSmith is the next coming of Joe (or anything close) should have their head examined....but this league is about winning, and Troy found a way to win. To me, that's cause for excitement and optimism (though it's also cautious, like yours).

cool, we're in agreement. its all goodYeah, I'm very excited about Troy's game yesterday, and I don't know what it means long-term. I've been saying for a few weeks that this season needs to become about assessing our QB situation. Alex can't get it done, no matter what flashes of good play he exhibits. While I still think that Alex can be a decent starting QB in this league if he were in an offense that played to his strengths, that will not happen here. We need to break away from him and get a fresh start, and we need to see what else we have.

David Carr doesn't have it. Troy Smith might. Nate Davis...who knows? Lets play the hot hand until its not hot and then go from there. It IS all about winning, but we've had journeymen come in here and win before and then they hit their ceiling and they don't win anymore. I'm thinking of Hill and JTO here. I would love nothing more than for Troy to show that he can be a good, exciting playmaker that can, if nothing else, be our QB for the next couple years while we develop a rookie or Nate or whoever.

Facts that people need to know when discussing Alex Smith as a starting QB in the NFL:

- Career 17-30 record as a starting QB
- Career QB rating of 70.2
- By comparison, Smith has slightly better career numbers than Rex Grossman (69.6)
- But he hasn't even been able to outplay such names as:

--------Jeff George (80.2)
--------Elvis Grbac (79.6)
--------Scott Mitchell (75.3)
--------Tim Couch (75.1)
--------Tony Banks (72.4)

Really...what else do you need to know to answer this question?

But, but, but, but, but, but (insert Alexcuse)......

I'm with you, Fred, I've seen more than enough of Alex Smith. Time to move on.

Troy Smith might be the answer, or he might not, but we KNOW Alex is not.

I can't think of anything more Singletary could have done to help Alex Smith succeed, and he went 1 & 6.

1 & freaking 6!!!

Some of those games were close, but some of those losses were directly related to Alex Smith's performance, and the team never got over the hump, never won the close ones.

Time to move on, irrespective of how nice a guy Alex is, how hard he works, how familiar he is with the offense, how well he commands the huddle, etc. He just doesn't perform on the field.

Not saying Troy Smith is the second coming of Montana or Young or even Garcia, but he appears to be ahead of Alex Smith when the ball is kicked off. IMHO.

i haven't seen/heard anyone say that they love singletary. consensus seems to be that we won despite a terrible gameplan. in fact, most posters on here are worried that Troy will be good enough to save Sing's job.

i would be disappointed. Troy made plays. Give him two weeks of practice as the starter, give him an actual gameplan (which might be asking for too much, considering our coaches don't know what that is) and see what happens. If he can duplicate and/or build on yesterday then keep riding him. If not, you can always go back to Alex if you must.
It'd be pretty terrible for the organization as a whole up to this point not to start Troy Smith after the bye (specially after his 4th quarter showing in the UK, however you dissect it).

The mentality-lock is still in place, which is that our season is over, and no fan has any reason to come to the remaining home games in glee of hoping Alex Smith suddenly turns into Superman after 6 predictable career years of mediocrity, and misleading stats shadowed by inconsistency.

Again, the Giants are in the f**king World Series, the 49ers are at the bottom of the NFC West, who wants to come out and watch Alex Smith play mediocre/inconsistent football anymore?

Troy Smith, QB, San Francisco.

Smith hadn't started an NFL game in 34 months -- since a Dec. 30, 2007 win over the Steelers as a Baltimore Raven. And to find out you'll get the start while in London, five days before the game, when you've never worked with the first-unit offense .... Pretty amazing deal. And Smith played well: 12 of 19, 196 yards, one rushing touchdown, one passing touchdown, no interceptions, and a gaudy 115.2 rating. "I'm not looking back at what should have been or what might have happened,'' Smith told me from London, after the Niners beat the Broncos in the league's international game at Wembley Stadium. "I'm just taking this chance and running with it.''

As I said on NBC Sunday night, you'll almost certainly see Troy Smith replace Alex Smith, regardless of Alex's health, when the 49ers come off their bye in 13 days against the Rams. My take is that Mike Singletary sees Troy as the make-something-happen sparkplug he never saw in Alex -- or in backup David Carr.

Alex's injury is a perfect "reason" to hide the benching, much like the personal reasons we heard earlier in the year for guys like Michael Lewis. Hopefully, Alex will request for his release.

I do think Troy showed enough to get another chance, and the bye is the perfect time for him to get more practice. Hope we see Troy given more command against the Rams to get an idea of how good he is/can be.

I think Niner Talk has been riding his nuts way too much, but I hope he gets another start or two. And I agree, the injury is the perfect excuse to do this; if Troy fails, then a healthy Alex can step back in with no drama.

Did you not read that

??

Oh, and he did get us the Win. Nothing else matters and that's more than enough for me.

ok. this is kind of exactly what i'm talking about with the nut riding.

I'm excited to get the win, too, and i'm very excited about what I saw from Troy. But I'm not going to completely s**t my pants over what may be a mirage. Remember JTO in Seattle? That was just as impressive a performance as Troy's. That's all I'm saying. Kid earned another start, for sure, and with him getting the bye week to prepare for the next game, we will know a lot more about him next time around. Until then I'll stick with my cautious optimism.

Stop being such a f**king Debbie Downer and let us enjoy the God-damn win! Nobody is riding anyone's nutz! We are just happy the kid stepped in and gave us a win. Something that the quarterback who's nutz you've been on for the last 6 years hasn't been able to produce!

Oh, and as to "if Troy fails, then a healthy Alex can step back in with no drama"; NFW! If he fails we go to the next guy. I pray never to have to see Alex under center for the 49ers again! The experiment has failed. Get over it. He had his chances and gave us 1 win in 7 games. Troy, 1 for 1.
There was a different feeling watching this game. After watching Troy Smith run around and avoid defenders while still completing passes, There was feeling of confidence that the 49er's OFFENSE would actually win this game.

The ability to score points late in the FOURTH quarter was huge.

MOST games are WON in the late periods and if the team is limited to scoring in just the first period (which they've done in the past), the chances of winning diminishes.

Now let's see if they can keep it up.

Troy should start against the Rams.

I can't believe I'm doing this, but I have to agree with Singletary. Take it on a week to week basis. If defenses figure out Troy's playbook limitations, it could get ugly fast. Then again, he might just have the magic to overcome and win.

At this point, the only reason I can think of that anyone would want to start Alex is his vastly superior knowledge of the playbook. I actually thought we were starting to get creative in the first half against the Panthers... just too many mistakes.

Other than that, I like what I've seen from Troy and I'd like to see him with more preparation during a home game. He's got tangibles and intangibles that Smith doesn't seem to have. Still, it was only one game.

I agree with the bolded. For the first game in a long time, I was not sitting there waiting for the O to screw up. I actually felt like they would play well.

I'd kinda be happy

because we'd probably end up with a better draft pick

NOOOOOO! If this happens, players will quit playing. And the net effect is much, much, much worse than good draft position.

This is exactly how some bad teams keep on losing year after year.
