Hypothetically! If Steve Young (prime) was QB now how far you think we could go?

I have no doubt that with Young (or any elite level QB), we would have reached the playoffs last year for sure and would be a SB contender this year and beyond. We finally have the pieces together almost everywhere else. QB is still our biggest issue. Both in terms of on the field play and overall leadership and direction as a whole for the team.

And likely if we did magically have that QB a few years ago, our whole head coach/OC situation would be different. Trying to make things work over the last few years with second stringers and/or guys who weren't ready yet has killed this team's chance to develop at a high level.

It all starts behind center in the NFL.

I'll probably be excommunicated for this but this team wouldn't be any better with Steve Young than with Alex Smith. Steve Young would have never won a superbowl if he had played for another team. He won that superbowl in 1994 because he pretty much had an all star cast around him. Just look at what that defense did to the Cowboys in that championship game. We buried Dallas early because of our defense.

Our line is good enough, and may develop. A great QB can make up for line issues. The best line in the world can't throw a TD for you. Whatever you think the weakest position on our line is (RG, C), if you replace that player with the best Olineman in NFL history, it wouldn't make half as much difference as replacing our QB with an elite passer.

Its hard to make a good comparison based on all the different aspects and factors of the unreliable change of time and space. Based on the theory of relativity. all motion must be defined relative to a frame of reference and that space and time are relative, rather than absolute concepts: it consists of two principal parts and they must remain apart Therefore since two times can't occupy the same space I can not give an accurate assessment.......

Young did not get the monkey off his back until he won the Super Bowl. I think Smith will have to win in the playoffs frequently enough to win over most of the fans (some will undoubtedly never come over - it even happened to Young.)

Tell' m Joe, Young only won 1 NFC championship and only 1 superbowl because he f**ked up a lot when it mattered. That "Monkey on his back" crap, he looked so nervous in some of those games. It took him a long time and a lot of help (and money) for him to get it done.

While there is no Jerry Rice or John Taylor today, Young did suffer for 3 years with no running game, and we have Gore. Also the 49er defense was not too hot during most of Young's years. That Saint team from Monday Night would have laid 35 on us during
most of the Young era. I hypothetically project the 2009-10 49ers would have had 11-12 wins in back to back years if Young was the QB. They would probably lose in the NFC Championship game, Minnesota and New Orleans would replace Green Bay and Dallas as the teams we couldn't beat.

Maybe Young deserved some of the blames for not winning the NFC Championship in the 1992 season, but the 1993 Cowboys offense was too dominant. The 16th-ranked 49ers defense simply was no match in that Championship game. Basically it was a 1st/16th team against 2nd/2nd team (offense/defense rankings.) Young played well in that game, but there was not much that he could do being hurried and sacked all the time, and he got no help from the running game. The defense did a decent job containing Irvin, but got killed by Alvin Harper, and E. Smith. You know it was bad when the backup Bernie Kosar came into the game, and the Cowboys didn't miss a beat.

We would win it all. The position players would be better, becuase Steve wouldn't allow anything less. He is a leader, and that is what this organization is lacking.

I think people forget that Young did not start a game as a 49QB until his 5 th year with the team and his 7th in the league. 4 years behind Joe learning the ropes and mopping up after him and then inheriting a bus load of pro bowlers seems to payoff. Young was able to advantage of the opportunity and made the most of it. He is good but he ain't Joe Montana

true, people are still hating on young and he won a superbowl, some people you just cant please but i think smith will get a ring. this team is looking good and smith is the reason whether they like to admit it or not.
