Hypothetically! If Steve Young (prime) was QB now how far you think we could go?

No west coast offense, and no receivers like Rice and Taylor that stretched the field. Steve was working with arguably the best weapons ever. Take them away and give him an offensive coordinator whose philosophy is 15 years outdated and I don't think there's any guarantee that he would be successful.

I dunno if Montana would survive in this modern era (he'd probably be less apt to injury due to all the penalties which protect the QB now-a-days), but modern QBs are all huge mofos now (even with Brees being 6'0, he's still a very bulky dude).
But no doubt in my mind if we had a circa 1984 Joe Montana (with a healthy scratch) that would be open for discussion, but he'd probably last in the league for a good 4 years or less.

Crabtree would have like 90 catches in two games, vd would have 38 tds and frank gore would have a zillion yards. The defense would never be on the field.

We would be playing for championships! You are talking about one of the best QBs OF ALL TIME, the dominoe effect that would have on the entire organization is unmeassurable (sp?), his leadership alone would make us winners, all this f**k ups by Raye wouldnt happen cause Young would have their asses, he held everyone accountable, he never had a defense of this caliber in my opinion and i know we had the #1 D. in 97 i think but still, and his production would be the cherry on the cake.

He would have owned Brady, Manning and grandpa Favre in this decade if he had not been dealt that concussion (and if he was like still magically playing around right now lol).

There would be no need to play any of the games, they would just hand us the Lombardi Trophy every year until he retired...

Doesn't matter who is at qb, if the position players don't hold on to the ball, and the defense doesn't make the crucial stop, it makes it difficult to win.
That said, we would be 1-1 right now at least and probably a 10-11 win team.
The 1991 49ers made a lot of mistakes (averaging 2 turnovers per game) and missed the playoffs altogether despite Young having a great year statistically.
Yes they were 10-6, considered a "bad" 49er team for that era. Now if the 49ers were 10-6, we would be jumping for joy, my how things have changed.
It's just a matter of expectation. That team was so much better than the 10-6 record at the end of the season. It routed a 11-4 Bears team that already made the playoffs. Basically the 1991 49ers were bitten with the post-Championship-loss letdown bug.

The 49ers of early Young years were blessed with very good coordinators: Mike Holmgren and Mike Shanahan who all went on to greater things. The quality went down afterwards, but by then Young became so good that his playing made up for the coordinators' shortcomings.

you guys do realize there was a time when the niners actually weren't good? People being excited for a winning season after years of losing would be no different than in '81. The niners are in a period of suckage and we are waiting for them to break out of it.
This team is right at the cusp, they need to get out of their own way.

Smith is emerging, this will be a moot point once he wins a superbowl in the next couple years.

I wonder how he would have gotten along with Sing, considering the fact that Steve was a natural and an outspoken leader. Also, I don't think he would have liked the offensive system that is currently being utilized by the Niners.
