The defense won't be elite until it gets more athletic in the secondary. Until then, the best it can be is very good. Top 10, but not with the likes of the Jets and Ravens.
But also don't forget, that we are missing our best pass rusher.

Nate is to concerned with padding his stat line. Spencer is serviceable but nothing great. Lewis couldn't catch Jimmy Valmer if his life defended on it. You fix our secondary then we might have a top-10 defense.
So with Nate being so concerned with padding his stats, how do you think he will do with all the double moves that the Saints WR's like to run. Brees is one of the best at baiting DB's and if what you say is true, it might be a long day for him.
It's going to be a long day for our whole secondary. We'll probably have to go prevent D to avoid getting burned.
I wouldn't be too sure about that. The Vikings did a fairly good job at limiting Brees with back up corners. I am not up on how good your defense is but I do know that the Saints will try to run on you guys like they did in the second half of the Vikings game. I do think that it was first game jitters for us and our offense will be just fine but they need to bring the ir A game in order to beat you guys. The Seahawks game was an abberition, IMO. You guys are a lot better than what you showed Sunday.
I don't think that you'll be able to run on our D. We are good in that regard. I think Brees and that passing attack will kick our asses, however.
The question is whether we can control the clock with the running game. If we can, that will help. After last Sunday however, I have my doubts.
How much better than the Vikings front 7 do you think the 49ers are? We do have two of the best guards in the NFL and they were just manhandling the Williams wall. Again, I am being serous because I really do not know how you guys match up against the Vikings front 7,
I think their run d ranked better than ours did last year. Doesn't really matter our douche bag QB will give the saints the game in the first quarter.
Is it really Alex Smith, or could it possibly be the Offensive Coordinator not putting him in the right position to win. I know I have seen this on the Saints before. A player can not succeed if the coaches keep putting them in screwed up situations. Brees is great but I know that without Payton calling the plays he would not be as great as he is.
Oh there's no doubt that our OC is god awful, dude has the imagination of a bagel. The problem is Alex is just as bad and together... Well you know. Oh, and for the record I've been a huge fan of Alex, always believed he would pull through. Right up until Sunday that is.

We had a couple of breakdowns with the corners trying to get pick 6's that led to 14 points, and towards the end the defense gave up with the rest of team.
Bulls**t. Both the Ravens and Jets look like elite defenses. Elite defenses don't give up easy ass f**king touchdowns 3 times in one game. Our defense looked like swiss-f**king-cheese.
We're not an elite defense. We don't have a great pass rusher, and our secondary is just average.
Jets had the best defense last season, and the Ravens have had a top 6 defense for 11/12 years. Unfair to compare us to them. We're not as good as them.
Our defense is fine though. A couple of less stupid gambles, and we're be in the 6-12 range where we belong.

Agree...the way Hasselbeck schooled both Nate and Brown was ridiculous...made 'em both look like rookies...so there's 14 of their pts. In the 2nd half, we got virtually zero pressure on Hasselbeck. Laboy got one sack, but it was too little, too late. I don't understand how we went from totally dominating the 'Hawk's offense to what we saw. It was embarrasing.

We can't bring the heat, that was a patch work o-line and the QB still had all day to throw.
The SAINTS O-Line is flawless, we will have to do much better next week to even have a chance!

The thing was Hasselbeck got rid of the ball so quickly, he barely got set before he released the ball. And somehow he always managed to find an open receiver. Nate and Terrell both bit on almost identical plays for TD's, with no safety over the top on their side. Where was the help over the top? Hasselbeck saw the holes and exploited them efficiently. It seems like we had the wrong scheme and poor execution on both of those plays. Seattle has gone on record to say that the Niners corners were being very aggressive, so they just started doing double moves, wait for them to bite on a pump fake and then go deep.
So why weren't the Niners able to hit the stuff underneath, get streaks across the middle? I think I saw one streak on the left side to Crabtree...that results in a TD because Crabtree wasn't looking the ball in. And how many screen plays did we have go to Vernon or Gore? 2? The run play calling was pretty unimaginative too. If we weren't getting it done with Gore on the inside, why didn't we try to get things going with Westbrook or Dixon? Stupid stupid stupid...

2 plays burned the D
They both involved a pump fake and double move.
Expect all teams attempting this on us all year.

The answer to your question is that at this point you're looking at a small sample size. It is 1 game. The Ravens have holes in their secondary. At this point, with their injuries, I would take the 49ers secondary over the Ravens secondary. The problem last night was the Jets and Sanchez weren't able to take advantage of it.
Lets also not forget that the 49ers defense has had games like what you saw the Ravens do last night (e.g. Bears game last year). And, they were having that type of game on Sunday for the first quarter and a half and gave the offense a chance to get at least 2 scores ahead but we all know how that turned out.
The defense could have and probably should have been better but its not why they lost the game. They lost the game because of the redzone offense that kept the Seahawks in the game and then everything snowballed from there.
The one issue seems to be that they don't get as consistent pressure as the Ravens and Jets do. It seems to be more of an all or nothing deal. If they get pressure, they're a very good defense. If they don't, they tend to give up more big plays and points, which is no surprise.
