Didn't the great Bill Walsh get demoted from VP and coach or GM and coach to Coach only by Eddie D a couple of times when he didn't make it to the superbowl? I'm sure I read that in one of Glenn Dickey's books. The great ones do not tolerate excuses or explanations. They only tolerate greatness, and nothing less.

what about players like barry sanders he has only made the postseason 2 times and has never won 1 game in the postseason yet he is a great RB so youre not saying hes a great RB? just cause he couldnt make it past the first round of the playoffs? This is a team sport QBs need a decent OL WR and RB to succeed alex only had a decent RB his o line (throughout his career till now) and WRS (before last year) have been sub par definitally in the bottom 10 in the league and not to mention the different OC ( i still cant find 1 QB who has done well in so many changes in the system in his career and maybe alex can be the first)

thanks for supporting my point. Barry Sanders was on perennially bad teams, yet his greatness was perenially apparent. Nobody made excuses for his performance, because they didn't need to. He just performed, every time, despite having an awful supporting cast.

RB and QB are different i was saying yes its true that some players cant succeed but the positions matter RB only needs a OL to do well however a QB needs a decent OL WR and RB to be sucessfull

Not bothered reading through everything in this thread. But anyways, Smiths had 2% higher completion percentage than Matt Ryan. So that means he is inaccurate and his receivers bail him out, and Ryan is super accurate and his probowl talented receivers (roddy white and future hall of famer tony gonzalez) drop everything? Hmmmm

you know you're comparing Matt Ryan's year 2 stats to Alex Smith's year 5 stats, right? If you compare just their year 1 stats, this discussion would be OVER. No GM in the league would take Smith over Ryan. Get real.

Vernon Davis > Tony Gonzalez

We also have one of the best receiving backs out of the backfield and Michael Crabtree.

Never said Smith was better. I would take Ryan over Smith for sure. However, its not a totally ridiculous comparison. Ryan had a way better oline, better more experienced receivers, much better OC and in the 2nd year of that offense. Ryan is good and better than Smith, but the difference isn't as much as some think IMO
