Greetings from Paris, fellow 49er fans! I am here for work for a few weeks, but that doesn't mean I can abandon the Zone... even in the quietest months of the off-season!
First of all, the women in Paris are amazing. Like, really amazing. They really know how to dress here. It's nice. Very nice.
Second, I'm reading a lot of posts and predictions regarding FB Moran Norris not making the 53-man cut in August. To which I say... huh?
I really don't get it. Moran is Frank's guy. He plows the way for #21.
The rock goes to #21. #44 leads the way.
Granted, Norris is getting older. And yes, looking for a replacement isn't out of the question. But really, do you guys really think Miller or Caulcrick is going to be Frank's guy? What have you seen from either guy that would make you think he can step in and have the intelligence and power Norris brings as a blocker for Frank?
Yes, I know Miller was pretty impressive in last year's preseason... but that's when he was catching the football in the 4th quarter of exhibition games. We've never seen Miller block for Frank against first teamers and do things like recognize blitz packages and adjust accordingly.
And yes, Norris is not much of a threat with the football in his hands these days, but has his run blocking turned to poo that quickly? Do you guys really think Norris will be replaced with a player that has never played in a regular season NFL game?
I just don't see it. IMO, Norris is a lock for the 53. What do you think?
I think yes.... but it will be about a 4 game try out. Last year the O-Line issues really limited his effectiveness getting to the 2nd level for blocks. This year if the interior can hold up he should prove his worth. But, if 4 games in he's ineffective then he'll be cut mid season. I had hoped we would have spent a 5th or 6th round pick on a FB but no luck.
BTW...... if you like the scenery in Paris I highly recommend visiting Shanghai. Fashion has taken a whole new meaning and the focus seems to be on really really short skirts this year...... WOW!

I think we should let him stay one more year to mentor miller on some techniques. And then its miller time! Brit brings that smash mouth football feel to the hash marks. I don't think we had a fb since beasely.

Im rooting for Caulcrick to win the Job
He's also a good short yardage back with some speed and can catch
Both Caulcrick and Miller have more to offer on Special teams as well
I think its time for one of our young FB's to take over

Norris didn't really play that well last season. I don't think he is a LOCK to make the roster by any means.
However, we all know how much Raye loves his "12" set and Norris fit's the typical FB mold for that style of play.

Do you guys really think Miller is ready to block for Frank without any regular season experience?
If Miller got some PT last year during the regular season, I'd say maybe. But so far, the dude is a preseason superstar and not much else.

I'm pulling for Caulcrick cause he played high school ball Western New York like me lol. I think ultimately Norris is our starter this year then he is done with us. I like Miller a lot though too and think he makes it on special teams.

Until we find a better FB then yeah he should play. He may have lost a step or two but his experience counts.

In this league, it's all about mismatches. Having a speedy yet physical FB is nearly a necessity to add variety to a offensive coordinator's playbook. More teams want guys like Le"Ron McClain and Leonard Weaver who pose a threat blocking, rushing, and pass catching.
One of the dumbest things Raye has done as an offensive coordinator is try to use Moran Norris as a weapon in those three areas when he's never done so in his entire career. Moran Norris set a career high in carries and posted a 2.9 average per carry in 2009-2010. That average goes way down if you ignore his longest rush of 15 yards.
I don't mind Norris as a traditional FB. But it irritates me that they haven't given Michael Robinson a real chance at that position. He's got the frame, speed, and power to actually be a legit FB in Raye's scheme. Maybe not an every down FB, but someone who could add that pass threat/wildcat threat.
Short answer: Yeah he'll make the roster due to Singletary and Raye's inside the box offensive system.

Norris is underated. Look for him to catch more balls out of the back field this season. His role will be more defined because we are going to be a much more balanced offense this season. Norris will show his worth.

I'm pulling for someone else to make it as FB, then the D will have to account for them as a pass catching threat, or even a threat to run it themselves. Moran isnt a threat for anything.

I would like to see one of our young guys become great blockers and also give us more of a passing threat like Rathman used to be , enough already with the one trick pony.

I wish we would have addressed the FB position it FA or the draft. Norris proved why the Lions cut him, HE SUCKS! Can't block, he's slow, not a running or receiving threat. I don't remember seeing him do much on ST either. We need to sign a better FB or hope that B.Miller gets better.
