I feel that our offensive players will never reach their potential under Jimmy Raye. Let's be completely honest here, this guy is terrible. We knew EXACTLY what Raye was calling 70% of the time during our games last year. And remember how horrible the TASER was? we were the kings of three and outs because of that BS. Also, don't think for a second that the post pattern will work for Vernon everytime next year. Teams are on to that play because Jimmy Raye has abused that play last year. Remember, vs. the Eagles at the end of the season, they put Sheldon Brown on Vernon and he couldn't do s**t that game. Raye was stunned, but of course, he had no answer. In fact, the pass to Vernon actually got intercepted.
Now the guy that Raye swagger jacked from, Dan Henning (Dolphins' OC), his team actually ranked top 10 in both rushing and passing in 2008. in 2009, they were top 4 in rushing and 20th in passing (still better than the 49ers). tell me who are the Dolphins' QB, WRs, and TE again?
I love the direction of this team, however, Raye is still a thorn in my sight.

That was a good malapropism, Team by the bay. Here's a thot for you: did we really NEED a skilled OC last yr, with no OL, no pass protection, no running game(okay, greatly diminished), some stone hands receivers, and guys who can't run crisp routes? I think the answer is no, we didn't get hurt by having a subpar OC.
This yr, however, it WILL make a difference. I am hoping baalke who knows other scouts, will get a line on an OC, or maybe this is the yr 9ers are grooming MJ for: it would be a natural transition, QB coach to OC. So far i have been impressed with MJ, but don't know if he is the answer or not. I agree he can't be as lackluster as jimmyrae. One thing, and this was what bigmike wanted, was consistency, even if it was subpar. And running it down their throats on 3rd and 3 may become doable, say behind AD and Iupati, altho i think they will not play on same side of OL. Nonetheless, cramming it down someone's throat, or the threat thereof, is a lot more doable than last yr , when it just didn't happen. Talk about getting excited for the season...most optimistic i have been since mooch left.
Somehow, i hope we land an OC in the Sean Payton/ravens/colts/ pitts mode, but that is going to be a lot harder than having baalke come in as GM. He will be a lot better acquainted with other QB coaches, and potential OCs, than scot was, because he has been "out there". I don't see jimmyrae making it after this yr, but if we do a 180, and end up with double digit wins, who knows?

When the team moved to a spread style offense the playcalling became a lot less predictable, but beforehand it was predictable because of the need for help in the run game. Luckily we addressed this area heavily in the draft so the playcalling just got a boost in all likelihood.
The Taser failed because from what I have read we 1- did not practice it often enough and 2- the run blocking wasn't very good. For the Taser/Wildcat to work the OL has to execute which they failed to do. With an improved OL we may or may not go back to it, but if we do the chances for success are likely improved.
FWIW Raye never truly swagger jacked it from Henning. This is a copycat league and a lot of teams did what the Dolphins effectively began using however the credit for the formation goes to David Lee (the Phins QB coach) who began using it as the OC at Arkansas (Gus Malzahn was also using it at Auburn as well). And the wildcat is in a sense a modern day ripoff of the Wing-T.

And with a better OL the playcalling will get even more vanilla. Just hope the D can withstand another year of not being able to get off the field.

I was pretty scepitcal myself the first couple of games last year of his ability to call a game. But what I started to recoginze is that even though he stubbornly called the same play often, he had a counter to that play that when the timing was right, he would use and we got a many 1st downs and TD's.
I think we should all be excited to see what he can do when he isn't handicaped with a crappy OL and lack of weapons... Don't hate on the old folks!

Raye was ok, i think we ranked like 27th in offense or something? Consider everything that happened:
QB Change
Offense Change
s**tty OL
Rookie WR with zero training camp, preseason and missed first 5 games as your #1
Vernon who before the year was close to being a bust
Missed Gore for 3 games
Yeah i'd say thats a recipe for a 27th ranked offense

The enigma with Raye is its unfair to generalize and label him conservative or uncreative. In specific circumstances he displayed an impressive tendency to make aggressive and creative play calls. All of those 4th down pass plays come to mind.
The problem, it seems, is he is unable to maintain that attitude for a full game. Under normal circumstances (e.g. 1st and 10 on our own 20 in the 1st quarter) he becomes entirely too predictable.
He needs to maintain that creative, attacking attitude throughout the game.
