Did he even get into the game before Manning was pulled?

Mays will be in the starting line up by game 4. Sing is going to play the younger guy in a vanilla scheme before they throw all the other things at them. if you watched the game A Dixon was running tackle to tackle nothing more. Give this top flight kid a little time and he will pay HUGE dividends. I think he's Sing favorite...both overlooked 2nd rounders.

I think he gave up an out-route when Manning was in for that TD drive.

We all hope that Mays develops to be a terrific player, but the learning curve is challenging, and it is going to take some time to adjust to the game. Hopefully, he can pick up some valuable lessons from this game and progress.
All of this being said, I was not high on the selection of Mays, grading Georgia Tech's Morgan Burnett a full round higher (I gave Burnett an early 2nd round grade and Mays an early 3rd). Burnett, who was drafted after Mays, is currently starting for the Packers. I hope my analysis is wrong in the end, and the Niners selected the right player. I just think the Niners picked the wrong guy.
Cheers.
Don't over analyze your brilliant Morgan Burnett grade. He hasn't even started a game and the only reason he is the starter is due to lack of options in GB.
"Green Bay — It isn't as if the Green Bay Packers have another real option at strong safety besides Morgan Burnett.
Atari Bigby probably is headed for the physically-unable-to-perform list after ankle surgery, meaning he must sit out at minimum the first six regular-season games.
Then there's a pair of converted cornerbacks, Derrick Martin and Will Blackmon, followed by career backup Charlie Peprah and free agent Anthony Levine."

The second most important thing about the guy is the head on his shoulders. I like him. He don't seem like a ding-a-ling; you never see an empty, glazed look in his eye. This isn't some "Pac-Man" type who we are crossing our fingers for in vain.
He seems smart, confident and tough, with high character. Oh ya, and he's also an athletic freak.

While the depth chart at GB is thin, Burnett has looked very strong in camp, and the team thinks he is the real deal. In his first preseason game, which is more important for rookies than vets, he stood up pretty well.
Meanwhile, Mays is really our fourth safety for the team, and seems to have a long ways to go to join the starting lineup. In camp, he has struggled to stand out, according to MB and PB, and in the game, he just didn't appear comfortable. Once again, one game. But, some of the concerns I saw during Senior Bowl practice week have not subsided, in my estimation. I do like that he is a film rat, and is trying hard to improve. This is admirable.
We'll see who becomes the better pro. There is no doubt that Burnett is ahead of the curve at this point. I think Burnett will emerge as a solid starter for the Packers, and Mays may, or may not, end up as a starter in 2011. He appears to be buried behind Smith for some time, unless he really raises his game.
The article linked showed how much the team thinks favorably about the kid, and confident that they have their starter.

The game more or less just confirmed much of what I saw with him at USC. Very stiff hips, trouble changing directions, often a step or two slow in coverage, below average at making plays on balls in the air. Some of that could be improved on but other things I just think its what the niners will have to live with. He'll probably excite some with his play but then frustrate far more often, especially in coverage.

Come on Maddogg.... "The team thinks he's the real deal." "There is no doubt Burnett is ahead of the curve..." Of course the Packers thinks he's the real deal. Niners thought A. Smith was the real deal and they still do. They thought Kwame was the real deal too. And there is "NO dOUBT" he's ahead of the curve? Based on training camp and pre-season? Where is Taylor Jacobs everyone? What about Kory Sheet? I remember him tearing s**t up in pre-season and TC.
And Mays is not the fourth safety. Since when are safties interchangeable? There are SS and FS. Lewis is the starter at SS with Mays getting ready to back him up if he does down. Burnett is the backup who is starting because their starter DID go down, and they don't have a choice. We have a Curtis Taylor too but i think Mays goes in if Lewis is hurt. Sing likes to throw players out there to see how they respond ie Goldson. Mays was wearing the green dot man, that speaks volumes that the staff think he's "the real deal" too.
I know you didn't like the Mays pick, but putting Burnett aside (which you spent half the time talking about for no reason but to defend your evaluation of Mays or your love of Burnett or yourself), for a rookie SS, Mays looks capable of making game changing plays. You can at least say he looked good stuffing that out pass.

While Mays tests out well with in-line speed in shorts, his football speed is lacking. Both Bing and Mays were knocked for playing with squared hips, slow black pedal, and mediocre shoulder turn. It's very evident that both lack true ball-hawking ability needed at the next level.
I believe they were both Thorpe award finalists too; Bing his final year, and Mays his junior year.
I don't understand how this comparison CAN'T be made. I mean, I realize the guy (Mays) ran a fast 40, but other than that I'm not sure of any other glaring differences?
Sooooo... 7th round pick in 2013. Yep, like I said a year ago, Please See: Darnell Bing

not sure where else to post this, but I just read that the Bengals tried to trade up to our slot in the 2nd round in 2010 to get Taylor Mays and we denied the request. Instead they got DE Carlos Dunlap 5 picks later, who got 9 1/2 sacks as a rookie. Then later of course we shipped Mays to the Bengals for a 7th rounder.
First off, Baalke needs to be accountable for not taking that trade option. He has indicated Taylor was not his man from the beginning, but rather Sing's. He's the trigger man, he should have done the trade, not listen to what a motivational speaker has to say. Second of all, if the Bengals wanted Taylor that bad, then Baalke should not have sent an email to all 31 teams trying to unload Taylor, thus dramatically reducing his trade value. He should have instead discreetly contacted the Bengals first and then other safety depleted teams, and he would have likely gotten a higher draft pick than 7th. All rookie moves on Baalke's part. I'm not sold on him yet.

So you want to say that the other teams do not do this? I believe they do it just does not leak.
