That was a tough loss and may have been the turning point and catalyst to not having a winning season.
I can't compare it to losing Steve Young in one instant though.

Of all the 90's seasons we didn't win, 98 was my favorite. That game killed me, but the 1995 Packers Divisional round loss was devastating because it was so unexpected and it had led to me hearing about #4 for the rest of my life.
This
I was shocked by that loss. Worst yet is my ex-wifes family is from WI and none of them liked me so they all put their animosity aside long enough to rub it in.
I got all buzzed up before the game expecting to watch another steeping stone towards another epic battle with Dallas and then it was over.....

for me it was the game a few years ago, when Rattay couldn't get anything done, dorsey couldn't do anything, and so they put in Cody Pickett....
I think that was the year that we got shut out for the first time in our history or something like that....it was crazy depressing for me...I was literally sulking in my chair wondering if we would ever rise to prominance again....
tough times....
also, my girlfriend had dumped me....but, that still wasn't as bad as seeing the niners lose....

Dont know if it was the most depressing but I deffinately remember the game a couple of years ago against the bears where I made it home about 3 minutes after the kickoff just to find out that the bears had scored 10 points already without the niners offense touching the field, that was depressing

Running off the field againt Tampa with over a minute left in the half in the playoffs was pretty bad.

I would have to say Jerry Rice's last game as a Niner. It wasnt a bad game, but I idolized him as a kid and never wanted to see him leave.

You're right dude! That was horrible. He had been our rock all season and we had no depth at that position at all. Once he went down, I knew it was all over...

Ditto.
Like picking your favorite Super Bowl win, picking depressing losses is just as hard.
I mean, how do you love one child more than another and how do you differentiate which one disappoints you more?
But if I had to pick a game that would be the one. That season we still got to the playoffs despite the injuries (one to B.Y. to end his season) and should have beaten the Dirty Birds despite that. Garry goin down that early just took the air out from our side of the field at that very moment.

I've been a Niners fan since 89 and my most depressing moment was Roger Craig's fumble against the Giants in 1990. We had it sealed, going to our 3rd super bowl in a row and all for naught...it was then that my 9 year-old mind realized the the niners could actually lose!!! Egads!!!
